The men’s basketball team split a pair of non-conference games on the road during winter break, posting a win over Indiana while dropping a game to Memphis.
Against Indiana Dec. 22, the Huskies used a 25-6 run to close out the first half en route to a 55-42 win over the perennial powerhouse Hoosiers (5-8, 0-1 Big 10). It was the first win for NU over a Big 10 team since 1991 and it extended NU’s winning streak to three games. Junior guard Matt Janning led the team in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore guard Chaisson Allen was also in double figures with 13.
On New Year’s Eve, the Huskies traveled to Memphis to take on the Tigers, last year’s national final runner up.
NU got off to a hot start and held a 12-4 lead with 14:01 left in the half. Junior forward Manny Adako was strong out of the gate, accounting for 11 of the first 14 Husky points.
But the Tigers came back strong and closed out the first half with a a pair of big runs, 15-0 and 8-0, respectively.
The second half was more of the same as Memphis (10-3) forced 25 turnovers for the game and ran away to a 80-48 win, halting the Huskies’ win streak and dropping their record to 6-5.
