The baseball team was picked 10th in the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) coaches’ poll yesterday, the league announced. James Madison received six first place votes and 95 total points to edge out Georgia State (91 points) for the top spot in the poll. Northeastern received 37 points in the poll, well ahead of last place Hofstra’s 10.
NU finished last season with a mark of 25-26-1, including a 12-17-1 conference record. The Huskies are led by manager Neil McPhee, who is entering his 24th season as Northeastern skipper, and by its captains, senior pitcher Jeff Thomson and senior catcher Frank Pesanello.
The team will open its schedule Feb. 25 in Sarasota, Fla. against Eckerd College. They will play their annual exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox Feb. 28 at the City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla. CAA play begins with a three game series at James Madison from March 20-March 22.
Prior to the season, the 2009 Huskies Baseball Lead-Off Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Alumni Center at 716 Columbus Place. Tickets are $75 ($50 for alumni of the past five years) and can be purchased by calling the Husky Athletics Club at 617-373-2582.
