Traveling to Burlington, Vt. last Saturday, the women’s basketball team learned about what winter was, and how to handle a storm, being thrown into the middle of one, and struggling to get out. The Huskies fell to Vermont, 76-65.
The Catamounts took an astounding 23 point lead in the first half, digging into Husky freshman Katarina Andersson, and holding the past Co-Rookie of the Week to a mere 11 points.
The Huskies failed to take advantage of some key opportunities throughout the half; the amount turnovers that lead to Vermont points and the lack of energy were some of the major reasons for Northeastern’s deficit in the first half.
“We did not dig in defensively,” said NU coach Willette White.
Vermont answered to a 6-5 lead by the Huskies with a 28-7 run, which took the score to 33-13, and then blasted their lead to an astonishing 26 points, 41-15. However, the Huskies then began their comeback and ended the half 43-20.
Down by 23, Northeastern did not back down, glowing out of the locker room with a fiery intensity, and immediately taking an 11-5 run.
However, Vermont answered with an 8-2 run of its own.
Still persevering, the Huskies hit the next eight points and cut the Vermont lead to 15, 56-41.
Applying full-court press the Huskies kept in it, fighting for what they wanted, and stirring up the Catamount offense, narrowing the deficit to 10, but were unable to pull out the victory.
“We have not had the kind of energy on the road as we do at home,” White said.
Earlier that week on Wednesday, the Huskies took on the Great Danes once again, after defeating them 72-59 in their last meeting.
Albany took an early five-point lead, but then encountered some foul problems with two of their starting players, who ended up sitting for an unusual amount of time. Northeastern took advantage and netted a number of three-pointers, which took the Huskies to a 29-24 halftime lead.
Albany, however would not allow Northeastern to get the best of them twice. They came into the second period strong as ever, and cut the Huskies’ lead with a bevy of three-pointers, eventually taking the lead 32-31, and eventually spurted out to an 11 point (55-44) advantage.
The Huskies came close several times, narrowing the gap to five, but still unable to come up with the victory. The Great Danes held the Huskies to 64-54 final.
Wednesday the Huskies will take on conference leading Maine at Solomon Court at 7 p.m.
