Spring into Fall

By Briyah Paley

NEW YORK CITY – Fashion Week went into full swing last week and neither snow nor rain nor sleet could stop the world’s top designers from showing off their stuff.

More than 100 designers were represented in the 11th annual jamboree, which took place in four large tents near New York’s Time Square.

The week kicked off with the Sean John (aka P. Diddy) show, attracting celebs like Kelly Osbourne and Mary J. Blige. The invitations reportedly cost $75 each to make and over 500 people attended.

Big name showstoppers including Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein were saved for last.

Lauren’s collection went urban with tweedy fitted jackets worn over knickers and gathered suede pants, and tops covered with a combination of beads, sequins, chains and even tufts of feathers for evening wear.

Karan picked up ideas from the conservative styles of the 1960’s and that decade’s edgier futuristic looks. The results were black-and-white tweed pieces, sprinkled with silver sequins.

Klein’s show was full of great clothes, including some pleated skirts that are hopefully the indication of a future of high waistlines for the anti-Britneys.

The pieces seem to be made for college students, because there were few things that anyone over 20 could really feel comfortable in.

One look that’s sure to be a staple in the fall collection is the miniskirt.

That’s right, girls. You better get used to it because it’s back. Insiders are saying that the 1960’s are going to be the decade to steal from this season. So, unless you’ve already been taking cues from Jackie O, it’s time to start rethinking your wardrobe for the fall and giving those peasant shirts to the salvation army.

As for the guys, come September, the fraternity boys are in luck as many designers gave a nod to dormitory living with funky flannels, sporty sweats and hippie tunics. Look for similar athletic-meets-classic combos from Nautica as well.

Sadly, on a college student budget, it’s true that most of us can’t afford to look our very trendiest this fall. But fortunately what’s in style will hit local, cheaper stores later on.
