Author speaks on post-college pressures

Kenneth Jedding, author of “Real Life Notes: Reflections and Strategies for Life after Graduation,” spoke to students and faculty Thursday about what college graduates should expect when they enter the working world.

Jedding said that people should expect to have at least three careers throughout their lives and not resist moving forward.

“We like to look at life as a photograph rather than a movie,” Jeddings said. “Our minds are wired to freeze-frame.”

He also said that it is not necessary for graduates to know what they want to do right out of college.

“All you need to do is to start in one thing,” he said, “and then keep your eyes open and see what happens.”

Jedding acknowledged that parents have certain expectations for their children. His own father expected him to be a banker, and so to please him, Jedding began his career unhappily crunching dollars and cents.

“When our parents have specific ideas about what we should do for a career, it tends to follow us,” he said. “Maybe they’re right, but often they just don’t know.”
