Reggae’s R’B man back with his third installment

Wayne Wonder is showing a different side of reggae with his current album “No Holding Back.” Wonder, who was born Von Wayne Charles, is showing that reggae consists of more than infectious and gyrating beats.

“No Holding Back,” is the equivalent to a smooth R’B album, with a little curry spice thrown in for added flavor. This may seem out of the ordinary for those who are unaware of reggae’s different levels. Wonder’s album sounds like a 17 track love letter. The first released single, “No Letting Go,” can be heard on countless urban radio dials and the video is on constant rotation on stations like BET and MTV.

“No Letting Go,” is not the only golden track on this album, there are many other soon-to-be hits waiting to be uncovered. One being “Friend Like Me,” that can be used as the nice guy anthem of this year. This is a song celebrating the “friendship” between a man and woman. It is a song with an important message with a contagious beat behind it.

One song that is sure to be an instant hit is “Crazy Feeling,” featuring Elephant Man. His fluent rap style is the key element in the song that offsets Wonder’s sultry voice. This is a much needed addition to get away from the many ballads that are on this disk.

What album would be complete without a shout out to the haters who have tried to hold them back throughout their careers? Well, Wonder is no different, he takes shots at those who are less appreciative of his skills on “Enemies.” The disc includes the bonus track “Saddest Day,” which he released 10 years ago.

Though this album is not incredibly innovative it is something that traditional R’B listeners who are looking for a change can listen to.
