A petite blond girl graces the cover of last month’s “The Improper Bostonian” magazine. She is Danielle Harder, one of Northeastern’s own. A bartender at The Place for the past two years, Harder, who stands at 4’11”, may be lacking in height, but she is the one in charge at the bar four nights a week.
The magazine, which comes out bi-weekly, features what’s new and exciting in Boston. For the April 16-29 issue, they featured the winners of the Boston’s Best Bartenders contest. Harder was nominated to be on the cover by The Place’s owners and her co-workers.
“The shoot [for the magazine] was really casual,” she said. “There were a lot of women and we got our hair and make-up done.” Unfortunately, she didn’t get to keep the clothes she wore, two expensive tube dresses.
“People come in and recognize me,” she said. “They act like they know me.”
Not that the 21-year-old minds the attention.
“I don’t like the clubs and bars,” she said. “It’s kind of nice [to work at The Place]. You grow up quicker.”
Originally from upstate New York, Harder is a business major. She currently works at The Arnold and is leaning towards advertising. Always a working girl, during her freshman year, Harder worked at Stars on Huntington and then Who’s on First, a popular dance club and bar close to campus. She was introduced to The Place’s owner through her job at Stars. He asked her if she wanted to work for him. Although it was slow at the beginning, The Place has become a regular hangout for the after-work crowd and older college crowd. Harder’s friends frequent there and yes, they do leave tips she said.
Although she can’t recall anything obscene that has been said to her by joking patrons, it wouldn’t matter anyway. Harder has a boyfriend, who is fine with her job.
“She looks gorgeous [on the cover of the magazine],” said Renee Dudley, Harder’s co-worker at The Place. “She’s a super nice bartender.”
With that in mind, “The Improper Bostonian” offers three pieces of advice when you go to a bar: 1) Reading about them here doesn’t make you their new best friend. 2) If while standing at the bar, you find yourself thinking you’re the funniest person who ever lived, it’s time to go home. 3) Tipping is not a city in China.
Harder thinks this is sound advice. “A lot of people tend to think that way when they’re wasted,” she said.
On Tuesday night, The Improper Bostonian held an awards ceremony for the bartenders and Harder was presented with an award for her bartending flair.
“It’s a picture frame that says Boston’s Beloved Bartenders 2003,” she said.
