After many valleys and peaks, trials and tribulations, and not to mention thrills and spills, the year has finally come to a close. It was a memorable campaign, no doubt, but, as always, it still came down to three basic themes: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
When one truly considers the goings-on throughout the university, the route represents a vibrant though uneven symphony.
In Husky sports, specifically, there have been times when a collective has moved in almost incomprehensible unison. Still, there have been other such scenarios whereas a unit’s play typified the true essence of a cacophony. Thus it is only fitting (once again) that music serves as the unifying theme. And, not coincidentally, that unifying theme has a strong contemporary flavor.
With that I present to you “The Northeastern News:the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (the musical).
No sense in delaying the inevitable; after all, that’s all we really want to know isn’t it?
So, what’s … really … good?
(Music)
Game-winning field goals, Miro Kesic hit
Six and one at Parsons, team’s can’t get with it
Don Brown brought defense … blau, blau
Tim Gale, big break, touchdown
Been up in Athens, as they throttled Bobcats
The big dogs, made opponents fall flat
Splat! Conference title, they all that
Need some points in a pinch, call up Brady ASAP
Alright then, but there’s some more
Field hockey set sights on Nov. 24
Another AE title? Knew that they would
But the question for ya’ll is … What’s … really … good?
It’s nothing, along the east coast see the squad touring
Got everyone from Brody to Liane Dixon scoring
Acclaim still pouring, prospects still soaring, but still acting like …
What’s … really … good?
Soccer laid them down, both teams slow to come around
Women in the postseason, men go to the second round
Barea bombs on Maine, Baseball shut down the Danes
Ahndraea garnered fame … What’s … really … good?
(chorus)
All the players, from Houghton to Ryan
Four crowns for swimming and diving, thriving
In the Bean … you know that they should
And we want to know … What’s … really … good?
All the teams, shot for spot
Spot for shot, Talk for walk, Walk for talk
Stock your skills … everyone knows the drill
Because we want to know … What’s … really … good?
And there’s so much more to it than just that. The men’s crew team looks primed for a strong run at the NCAAs; in addition to Allen, several athletes in the track program (Idris Payne, Ebony Jack, Vin Tortorella, Whittly Jourdan) made large contributions both indoors and outdoors; and the volleyball team excelled, catching fire before losing in the conference tournament. That’s not even mentioning the emergence of young talents on both basketball teams, most notable Barea and Katrina Andersson.
Still, with the good comes the bad, though there really was not too much to whine about regarding the past year.
Sadly, I must be the bearer of bad news.
(re-enter music with intro)
Brooke Whitney went away, bad news …
Jim Fahey’s in San Jose, bad news …
Cross-country got young, bad news; whenever teams lose, it’s bad news …
Syl’ and Dunn got hurt, bad news …
Field hockey got jerked, bad news …
Injuries hit women’s hoop, bad news; whenever teams lose, it’s bad news …
(verse)
The men’s hockey team? Losing bad
The D was slow; going to Matthews was a drag
After last year, Woog could brag
A losing campaign pretty much ended that
At one point, winless in six
Felt bad for Chanda, had to fend away all those bricks
Whitney’s game sweet like 16 candles
Add a two, that’s how many times the crew got handled
They just wanted bleeding to stop
Kind of like the men’s team, but they fell to the River Hawks
Santilli sparked late last year
Guerreiro dished, but Gibson choked up back there
At least that’s what Crowder feared
Switched to Gilhooly when he felt the end time was near
Many teams need the upgrade
But this pair needs to make like Bryan Nathe, and cut their losses like a switchblade
(chorus)
You don’t like L’s; L’s don’t like you
But they pile up … teammates up in arms
What to do? (Someone’s back at it again)
You don’t like L’s; L’s don’t like you
But they pile up … teammates up in arms
What to do? (Guess who’s back at it again)
As far bad goes, these two tough-luck squads had the market covered. After narrowly missing the frozen four last season, an inexperienced defense, inconsistent offense, and other factors (more details later) left the women’s ice hockey squad completely out of the postseason. The men’s team also missed the playoffs after being outscored 115-83. The death of Will McDonough, a Northeastern alum, also hit hard.
That leaves us with the ugly:
(once again, music)
We don’t choose injuries; they choose their own foes
Walter messed up his ankle, Gazzola? Elbow
Things aren’t great now, but they’re much improved
Women’s hoops turned to ER again; that’s no good
This here is Willette’s moment; I put my word on it
You know they got the talent, but wounds won’t let them flaunt it
So buckle up, it may get bumpy
Don’t know of the reason, but Woog got grumpy
The Globe and the Herald got her open wide
Players seem cool enough, but there’s no joke inside
This is complicated — at least to her it is
Had to cut two players, said that both of them were cancerous
Someone’s not talking; I smell deep doo-doo
There’s got to be something; Lorion has already sued
Let’s leave it at that … if only things were lovely
Worrying about the good, the bad… but now I brought the ugly
(chorus)
It’s gon’ get uglyyyyyyyyyy, uglyyy, uglyyy
In here! Huh, in here!
It’s gon’ get uglyyyyyyyyyy – in here!
Huh, in here! Huh, in here – uh-ohh!
There’s not much else to say about the year in review; if you need a translation, then you probably haven’t been following the sports scene on Huntington. Enjoy the summer.
