After a prolonged scoring drought, the Northeastern women’s soccer team turned on the spigot against Iona, striking for six goals Wednesday at Parsons Field. The 6-1 victory evened the Huskies record at 2-2, and broke a streak in which the squad was averaging less than a goal per game. “This was the same as most of our other games,” said NU coach Ed Matz. “We possessed the ball well in all the games, the one difference was that we were able to score.” Junior captain Jen North scored twice and dished out an assist. For her efforts she was awarded America East Player of the Week. Freshman Kristen Blake was also decorated, earning America East Rookie of the Week honors after picking up her first career goal and dished out a pair of assists. North got the ball rolling early, scoring 23 seconds into the game, redirecting a pass from Blake. “The goal a minute into the game lifted us up a bit,” Matz said. “Everyone on the team kind of breathed a sigh of relief.” North would score the eventual game-winner unassisted in the 32nd minute. “Jen is one of those rare athletes,” Matz said. “She knows one thing: that’s how to put the ball in the back of the net.” The Huskies picked up where they left off in the second half, with Liz Dyjak picking up her first goal of the season with the assist going to North. Blake netted her first goal as a Husky in style, with a 30-yard blast over the Iona keeper’s head in the 64th minute. “Kristen seems to get better and better every day,” Matz said. “She’s going to be quite a player.” Sophomore Jess Pfeifer and redshirt freshman Kristin Kowalik would find the mark less than eight minutes apart to put NU at the half-dozen mark. Matz thought that the team is beginning to adjust to their roles in the team’s 3-5-2 formation and feeling freer to take more chances offensively. North agreed that the team is beginning to gel. “Our passes are better and we’ve been playing smarter,” she said. “As a whole our team has gotten closer off the filed and it has helped us on the field.”
