Two robberies and one attempted robbery led to the arrest of a local man early Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Elie Auguste, 19, was arraigned Thursday in Roxbury District Court on two counts of robbery, one count of armed assault with the attempt to rob and two counts of receiving stolen property from three separate incidents occurring around the same time. Bail was set at $7,500 cash and has yet to be posted. Auguste is currently being held at Suffolk County Jail and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for sometime in December.
The robberies began when a 21-year-old student reported being robbed at gun point at approximately 3 a.m. by three men in a car on Columbus Avenue. The student was able to provide an accurate description of the car and the direction in which it was heading. A Northeastern University police officer in the area located the car parked in the middle of Gainsborough Street and found the three suspects standing next to the car.
Two of the three suspects fled upon the officer’s arrival, while Auguste got into his vehicle and drove towards the officer’s patrol car. The patrol car blocked the car’s exit and Auguste was arrested.
“Technically, [the arrest] was in the Boston Police Department’s jurisdiction … but when they got there, NUPD had already made the arrest, so BPD deferred jurisdiction to us,” said James Ferrier, the associate director of public safety at Northeastern.
The car belongs to Auguste, and the wallet of the student was found in the back seat of the car. The student who had been robbed was unable to identify the suspect, but was able to positively identify the car.
The second suspect was found in an alley near St. Stephen Street by the security officer of a local condominium complex. The officer contacted BPD, who in turn informed NUPD. At the scene, BPD found the weapon, a BB gun molded to look like a handgun, and turned it over to NUPD.
Around this time, a 19-year-old Boston resident reported to BPD that he had been robbed on Westland Avenue by three men in a car that matched the description of the previous robbery. Upon returning to the scene where Auguste had been arrested, BPD found the wallet of the man in the bushes where the car had been parked.
The third victim, a 19-year-old Bentley College student who lives in the area, later reported that she had been approached by the three suspects in front of her apartment building on Gainsborough Street, where they attempted to rob her. The suspects had fled after being appro-ached by the NUPD officer who arrested Auguste.
Over the weekend the Bentley student reported to police that she saw a man searching through the bushes in front of her apartment building. She believes that the man may have been one of the three who attempted to rob her.
Ferrier said he hopes the gun will provide evidence to link the second suspect to the crimes.
“We’re optimistic that we’ll get fingerprints off the BB gun and get the second suspect,” Ferrier said.
