The Northeastern swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 on the season, winning a 13-event meet against Southern Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut State University last week.
While officially, the Huskies tallied 62 points, the team placed first in nine of the 11 swimming events, and second in the other two. In six of the first-place finishes, Northeastern swimmers took second place as well.
Coach Roy Coates was pleased his team took advantage of the flexibility this meet offered them.
“This level of competition we went against allowed us to try people at off events and they more than met my expectations. Usually when you go against weaker competition, the motivation isn’t always there, but I have to say this time the team performed very, very well. This is a really good team.”
Freshman Kerby Lewis took first in two events, the 1000-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomores Emily Crookall-Nixon and Sarah Reddick, juniors Jordan Crown and Katie Schmaling, and seniors Jesse Coxson and Katie Kane also captured first place in their respective events.
“[Kerby] is very versatile,” Coates said. “She can swim a bunch of events and do very well in all of them. She’s definitely going to swim individual medleys, and definitely freestyle, but the question is distance. So far, we’ve been using her for everything.”
Kim Grant, a junior from Southern Connecticut State, won both the one-meter dive and three-meter dive, and was the only person to break 200 points in either event.
