Walking down the street, it’s easy to spot many people wearing their headphones and listening to their Walkmans. So, what set freshman journalism major David Hoffman apart from others? He wasn’t just listening to music, he was learning.
Hoffmann, from Ithaca, N.Y., was found near Shillman Hall between classes, listening to a mixed CD which had songs on it that he said he will eventually cover in his band which currently has no name. Hoffmann not only shared with The News the contents of his mixed CD, but also some insight into his love for all things music.
The Northeastern News: Which songs are on your mix?
David Hoffman: Three songs: one from Audioslave, one from Soundgarden and one from Stone Temple Pilots.
The News: Why only three songs?
Hoffman: I’m learning them because I’m covering them in a band.
The News: What music do you like?
Hoffman: All kinds of stuff: Rock and roll, jazz, hip-hop.
The News: What is the most recent CD you’ve bought?
Hoffman: Alkaline Trio’s “Good Mourning.”
The News: What does music mean to you? Is it a form of expression? Does it inspire you?
Hoffman: It does all of those things. Music has been a big part of my life, I play it all the time. I’ve always played everything from the guitar and drums, to the violin.
The News: Out of all the concerts you’ve been to, which was your favorite?
Hoffman: I’ve been to a lot of concerts since I was really little, but I really enjoyed seeing Soul Live at a free show in my hometown of Ithaca, N.Y.
