NU athletes lead in academics

Athletic Director Peter Roby released the 2011-12 student-athlete cumulative GPA and highlighted the department’s successes in his semesterly update at Wednesday’s meeting of the Faculty Senate. At 3.115 for the 2011-12 academic year, the Huskies’ cumulative GPA has been steadily rising since the 2007-08 season’s 3.041, when Roby was appointed director.

ACLU criticizes BPD surveillance

The Boston Police Department (BPD) has been conducting unlawful surveillance on peaceful protesters, according to reports. “Policing Dissent,” a recent study by the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLUM) and the National Lawyers Guild, Massachusetts Chapter (NLG) provides a detailed account of BPD and its fusion center, the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC), illegally gathering information about Boston activists.

Kenneth G. Ryder, former university president, has died

Kenneth G. Ryder, who served as president of Northeastern University from 1975 until 1989, died earlier this week. His passing was announced in an email from President Joseph E. Aoun on Tuesday afternoon. The Huntington News will have more coverage of Ryder's passing in the days ahead.

University buys Hastings Wing

Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced Wednesday that Northeastern purchased 320 Huntington Ave. from the Greater Boston YMCA, and signed a 20-year lease allowing 67 units of transitional housing to continue to operate in the Hastings Wing of the building.
