NU to offer urban landscaping

Northeastern’s School of Architecture introduced a new undergraduate program in urban landscaping Dec. 2, to begin in fall 2011. Curriculum for the new major will focus on environmental sustainability as it applies to urban architecture, a subject on which the school already focuses on.

NU Shuffle goes online

Many students at Northeastern have been upset and irritated by the NU Shuffle for years, and now one student is doing something about it. Wells Riley, a junior graphic design major, created Northeasternshuffle.com, a website he hopes will “make the shuffle a little more bearable.”

The end to another semester is quickly approaching. For me, the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view at too rapid a speed. My roommates and I, along with every other student, are drowning in homework and studying to prepare for the dreadful start of final exams and paper due dates that lurk a mere eight days from now.

SGA fails to post documents

The Student Government Association (SGA) website says a summary of its Student Activity Fee (SAF) allocation will be posted once per month at minimum. But the last update was put on the site Sept. 26.

Activities periods could be replaced by classes in 2011

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced yesterday that the Offices of the Registrar and Provost have proposed a plan that will create 226 new sections for classes. The plan involves eliminating of activities period on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Bouvé dean to leave post after 13 years

Bouvé College of Health Sciences Dean Stephen Zoloth announced his resignation in an e-mail to the college’s faculty and staff last Tuesday. “I have always thrived on new challenges, and on reflection, I think that now is a good time to look for new ways to make an impact,” he said in the e-mail. “Therefore, I have told the President and Provost that I have decided to step down as dean.”

New OSCCR director starts Monday: Mary Wegmann will take over as director of the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) Monday. She will replace Colleen Ryan, who was appointed August 2009.

Homecoming this week

This year’s Homecoming theme, “There’s No Place Like Northeastern,” is intended to promote unity among the members of the multifaceted university community. “We are a school where people are always coming and going,” said Brittiny Rae Gagnon, junior health science major and Homecoming Committee co-chair. “They’re going away on co-op or study abroad, but they all come back here to Northeastern in Boston.”

Aoun promotes international work

President Joseph Aoun made an appearance in front of the Student Government Association (SGA) on Monday evening to talk about international co-op. Specifically, he said students aren’t doing enough of it.

New technology in Snell part of test-run, ends this week

Student reaction to a media station set up for group use in Snell Library two weeks ago has been overwhelmingly positive; unfortunately for those who have yet to try the new product, it will be gone by the end of this week. The product, called the Mediascape, consists of a four-stool set-up, a high-top table and two attached flat screen monitors on the first floor for students working in groups to plug their laptops into and use for display.

Obituary: Andy Prior, recent ASL graduate, mentor

Northeastern students and faculty remember recent graduate Andy Prior as a remarkable man who went out of his way to help others, from fellow sign language interpreters to deaf children and students. The 23-year-old American Sign Language/English Interpretation major, who graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree, was struck by an SUV at around 11:45 p.m. Sunday on Tremont Street near the Roxbury Crossing T Station in Roxbury while riding his Vespa scooter.
