Laptop lock pilot approved

Laptop combination locks for students working in Snell Library to lock their laptops will be available as early as this month, a move that could slash the number of computer thefts at Northeastern. The university’s Student Government Association (SGA) is working in conjunction with library officials to start a pilot program to offer the theft-deterrent devices for rental at the front desk of Snell. The devices for the pilot program were purchased with funds from the Provost’s office. “It’s already proven students want this,” SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Sabo said. “Other schools offer something like this already.”

Northeastern College of Business Administration graduate Patrick Gaston was named to a one-year post with the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Gaston, who received a master’s of business administration in 1992, will serve as executive in residence for the group starting Monday. He is also president of the Verizon Foundation.

SGA backs axing activities periods

The Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution Dec. 13 supporting the university administration’s proposal to eliminate activities periods starting Fall 2011, a move intended to create 226 new sections for classes.

Library security measure stalled

A new policy requiring students and faculty to swipe their Northeastern Husky Cards in order to enter the library was recently put on hold due to technical difficulties with the card swiping machines. Library administrators announced the policy in early December, and the machines were installed for a short while over winter break but had to be removed because they were unable to read older faculty cards.

Man fatally shot on Mission Hill

A pin placed on a map where the shooting took place, within a half-mile of campus. A 21-year-old man was shot and killed on Mission Hill late Thursday afternoon, Boston Police Department (BPD) officials said. BPD had not recovered a weapon or taken a suspect into custody as of 9 p.m. Police have not released the victim’s name, identifying him only as a black male.

Schedule could change

The approximately 30 students in attendance brought up a wide variety of issues, mainly focused on the proposal’s effects on student groups on campus. Many students argued that losing a designated free time would be harmful to students who are involved with clubs.
