University evacuates 3 students from Egypt

Three students enrolled in the university‘s study abroad program in Cairo, Egypt returned to Boston last night after spending more than a week in the politically unstable country. Danielle Kluger, a middler criminal justice major who was one of three Northeastern students in Egypt, said the protests came as a surprise to her when they started Jan. 25.

Changes planned for Cabot

Deans of newly-formed colleges meet, listen to students

The deans of the three newly-formed colleges met Jan. 27 in Curry Student Center’s McLeod Suites to meet students and discuss concerns and new ideas for the future of their new institutions, all saying they were optimistic toward programs and co-ops offered through the university.

Senate scraps free periods

Northeastern’s Faculty Senate members voted Wednesday in favor of cutting activities periods by a vote of 30-2, with one abstention. The resolution details a plan to replace free periods Wednesdays and Thursdays with a new course sequence. This change will support an additional 226 class sections. It must now be approved by the provost and the president before implementation.

NU hits record for applicants

Northeastern received nearly 43,000 applications from prospective freshmen for the fall term, more than any private university in the country and breaking its own record for applications received.

Aoun taps former DA for senior VP position

Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun has appointed former Suffolk County district attorney and Northeastern alumnus Ralph Martin as the university’s senior vice president and general counsel, according to a university release yesterday.

Student tickets for this year’s Beanpot Tournament will go on sale at Matthews Arena Saturday at 9 a.m. Depending on location in the TD Garden, tickets are either $32 or $42 and are valid for all four games of the tournament. Students can purchase one ticket with a valid Husky Card. Doors at Matthews Arena will open at 8 a.m. Northeastern will play Harvard in the first round of the tournament at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at the TD Garden.

King honored at ceremony

Members of the Northeastern community gathered yesterday in Blackman Auditorium to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while inspiring attendees to promote his ideals. The event, sponsored by the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute, featured entertainment and speeches intended by Northeastern officials to inspire students and remember Dr. King.

New OSCCR head settles in
