HEAT originally started back in the spring of 2007, when we encouraged President [Joseph] Aoun to sign the ACUPCC (American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment), basically a commitment that many college presidents have signed to show the commitment of their institution to become a sustainable, climate-controlled campus.

Northeastern ranked second “Up-and-Coming” university

Northeastern placed second on the 2011 US News and World Report Best Colleges: Up-and-Coming National Universities, sharing the spot with Drexel University in Philadelphia, which also has a co-op program, and Arizona State University.

Men’s Hockey: Ongoing success attracts new recruits

Greg Cronin took over the hockey program in 2005, and a lot has changed since posting a dismal 3-24-7 record. Nine of his players have signed professional contracts, and another eight of his players attended NHL developmental camps during this off-season. He even made an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009.

Column: Women’s Soccer team set to unveil Parsons Field makeover

As summer comes to a close, it’s finally time to get the 2010-11 season underway. To open Northeastern’s fall season, the women’s soccer team will welcome reigning Southeast Conference (SEC) champion South Carolina to the newly renovated Parsons Field. Parsons, which no longer hosts any collegiate football, was in desperate need of a face-lift, and the women will look to kick things off in a positive way Sunday.

Northeastern ranked 69th in nation

For the second year in a row, Northeastern jumped double digits in the US News and World Report college rankings, reaching its highest placement ever: 69th. Two years ago, Northeastern broke into the top 100 National Universities in the 96th spot. Last year, it went up to 80 and this year it rose another 11 spots to 69, tying with the University of Connecticut and Virginia Tech.

NU named top green school

Northeastern made the Princeton Review’s list of the 18 greenest schools in the country with a perfect score on the Green Honor Roll, and officials said they plan to continue sustainability development in the fall. Northeastern was one of 703 schools that participated in the survey for the Princeton Review’s 2011 edition of its college guide.

Kappa Sigma Fraternity is hosting a barbecue in the Snell Library Quad with free food, games and music. The barbecue will be from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, and all members of the Northeastern community are welcome.

Applications are still being accepted for nuSERVES 2010. Students will spend Monday, Aug. 30 through Friday, Sept. 3 serving Fenway, Mission Hill, Roxbury and the South End doing various community service projects. The applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, and the final deadline is August 13.

New dining options for fall

Meal plan dining options will be extended come fall, with new locations to swipe for meals, extended hours and more points allotted at Outtakes. Churchill Hall will be replaced by a Rebecca’s Cafe, a Burlington-based chain caterer Aug. 23. The restaurant carries sandwiches, salads and hot entrees, and will allow students to use their meal plan instead of cash.
