Living off-campus

September 30, 2010
Living off campus provides a certain type of freedom on-campus living doesn’t – no resident assistants (RAs), no signing in and fewer restrictions. But it also comes with certain liabilities and responsibilities on-campus students don’t need to worry about. University officials are urging students living off campus to be good neighbors and to respect surrounding communities, as emphasized in the new Northeastern University P.L.E.D.G.E.

September 23, 2010
Two and a half weeks into the first semester of the Northeastern University P.L.E.D.G.E. – a message from the administration urging students to be good neighbors in the Mission Hill and Fenway areas – students and long-time residents find themselves in an ideological battle over acceptable behavior on Mission Hill. This struggle is nothing new.

Student groups are coming together Wednesday for this year’s Campus Sustainability Day to continue promoting green practices in everyday student life. “The goal of the day is to showcase and demonstrate what Northeastern is doing, what individuals can do, and what student groups are doing regarding sustainability on and off campus,” said Carol Rosskam, sustainability manager. “We want to provide resources and have a little bit of fun with it.”

The Faculty Senate convened Wednesday to discuss changes to their policies, as well as Northeastern’s facilities and admissions processes. Louis Kruger, the chair of the Senate Agenda Committee for this academic year as elected this past spring, said he hopes this year can further the progress Northeastern has made as a university in recent years, like the rise in the U.S. News and World Report rankings, and the Faculty Senate is the force that will drive these improvements.

NU enacts P.L.E.D.G.E

September 16, 2010
There’s a new acronym on campus: The Northeastern University P.L.E.D.G.E. For the Fall Semester, first year students had to read the P.L.E.D.G.E handout, watch a video and sign off in order to access their myNEU accounts. Others had it handed to them in flier form while moving into their new digs on Mission Hill or the Fenway. The Office of Student Affairs created the P.L.E.D.G.E. in an effort to make Northeastern students better neighbors.

Students’ new travel site reviews, suggest hot spots abroad

September 16, 2010
Two Northeastern students took advantage of their common love of traveling and living abroad to launch SANEtraveler.com earlier this month, a website dedicated to helping other students make the most of their time abroad. Seniors Nora Drago and Stephanie Filipek officially launched their website Sept. 1. SANEtraveler.com, which comes from the phrase “Study Abroad Naked and Exposed,” provides user-contributed reviews of restaurants, hostels, bars and hangouts that are a bit off the beaten path in hopes of giving students a less “touristy” experience abroad.
