Career Services ranked first in nation

For the third year in a row, Northeastern’s Career Services office was ranked the best career service department in the nation by the Princeton Review. The rankings, part of The Best 373 Colleges book, were released Monday, though the details of the lists have not been released besides the top holder of each.

NUPD detain Boston shooter

While patrolling near the Fenway Thursday, Northeastern University Department of Public Safety (NUPD) officers detained a man in connection to a shooting in the area. An officer was on bike patrol around 7 p.m., when he heard gunshots near Fenway Park, said Jim Ferrier, associate director of public safety. As the officer approached, he saw a man running away from the noise and radioed a description of the man as well as his direction.

All floors of Snell Library are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week after much student demand, library officials said. The change began July 5 and was built on the success of keeping the first floor open at all times.

City Councilor takes position at NU

July 6, 2010
After nine years on Boston’s City Council, John M. Tobin will become Northeastern’s vice president of city and community affairs Aug. 2. Tobin said he will help communicate with surrounding communities about Northeastern’s affairs, including Institutional Master Plan (IMP), a guideline for the university’s expansion projects over the next 10 years. The university recently asked for an extension on the plan despite its original due date of July 13.

The Phi Delta Chi pharmacy fraternity is hosting Alternative Health Day beginning at 9 a.m. today in the Curry Student Center indoor quad, according to a message from the group. Activities include a blood drive in the Curry Student Center ballroom, making stress balls in the indoor quad, an acupuncture presentation at noon and a free yoga session in the McLeod Suites at 3 p.m. There will also be health information and giveaways throughout the day. Dean appointed to College of Social Sciences and Humanities

Dr. Georges Van Den Abbeele, former dean of humanities at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was appointed the dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, according to an e-mail from the Office of the Provost. He will begin Sept. 15.

Dean appointed for College of Arts, Media and Design

Dr. Xavier Costa, an architect, author and former dean of the Elisava Design School at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, will be the first dean of the newly-formed College of Arts, Media and Design Sept. 1, according to and e-mail from the Office of the Provost. Costa was one of the candidates recommended to Provost Stephen Director by a committee of nine people, including an undergraduate and a graduate student, and six faculty members. "[Costa] brought and exciting sense of possibility for the interdisciplinary work that will go on here," said Stephen Burgard, Director of the School of Journalism and a member of the search committee.

First College of Science dean announced

Dr. J. Murray Gibson was named the founding dean of the new College of Science, according to a university press release. Gibson, who currently works at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois as the associate laboratory director and the director of advanced photon source, will take over the dean post Oct. 1.

Northeastern’s Burlington campus expansion approved

June 22, 2010
Officials of the Burlington Planning Board approved an expansion of Northeastern’s Burlington campus, which will nearly double the size of campus’s facilities, last Thursday. The building is estimated to be between 60,000 and 70,000 square feet, and house a graduate level research center, according to a June 18 article in the Boston Globe.

Philip Cheney, respected mentor and faculty

Philip W. Cheney, 74, senior consultant for corporate and government partnerships for the Center of Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) at the College of Engineering, died at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell May 25. After spending 40 years at the Raytheon Company, Dr. Cheney retired from his post as vice president of engineering in 2001. However, he wanted to keep working. In 2003 he returned to work force, joining Northeastern not only as a part of CenSSIS, but also as a visiting professor, engineering executive in residence. He also taught an engineering leadership course for the Gordon Engineering Leadership Program.
