A few times a year, then-Prof. Bernard L. Gordon would show up at the offices of his colleagues in Northeastern's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences with armfuls of books and artifacts from Book and Tackle Shop, a bookstore he owned in Rhode Island. He would set the books down and start to talk about art, history, fisheries – any topic he knew his colleagues were interested in. "With Bernie, you never knew what the subject of the conversation would be," said Mal Hill, chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. "But you didn't have to worry much. He could talk about a wide range of topics."

President Joseph Aoun sent a letter to Senator Scott Brown (R-Mass) to support the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, a federal bill that would give young, undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship. If passed, qualifying immigrants would be granted conditional status for six years, which would allow them to complete at least two years of college or military service and apply for legal, permanent residence. “As an educator, it is my personal belief that expanding educational opportunities for young people is critical to the continued vibrancy and leadership of our nation,” Aoun said in a statement to The News.

Payne’s parents: closer to finding murderer

May 25, 2010
The parents of Rebecca Payne, the Northeastern student shot to death in her Mission Hill apartment two years ago, said police recently told them there are “persons of interest and some leads” in the case of her murder, which has not produced any arrests to date. “They’re pretty sure that Becca was not the intended target, that it was a case of mistaken identity,” Nicholas Payne told The News. Rebecca Payne was 22 when a building manager found her dead in her Parker Hill Avenue apartment on May 20, 2008. The athletic training major had been shot twice in the legs and once in the chest. Nicholas Payne said Boston Police Department investigators “seem pretty sure” that the killer or killers entered his daughter’s apartment through her patio door.

Mission Hill residents address concerns to university officials

May 21, 2010
About 50 Mission Hill residents attended Northeastern’s Community Conversation at the Mission Church Thursday evening. The heated audience made it clear that until the university follows through with its master plan to build two more dorms, it would not approve an extension. These messages were relayed to Larry Brophy, associate director of government relations, Bob Gittens, vice president for public affairs, Mike Armini, vice president for external affairs and Jack McCarthy, senior vice president of administration and finance. The four men representing Northeastern had prepared a presentation, but they didn't get far before they were interrupted by the audience. Members of the community, including Massachusetts State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez and City Councilor Mike Ross, insisted the university has not followed through on plans such as the construction of Building K or taken action on community demands and promises for the past three years.
