Fox re-elected SGA president

Both Student Government Association (SGA) Presidential Candidate Amanda Sabia and current Vice President for Student Affairs Derek Miller have declined to seek a position on next year’s SGA executive board after President Ryan Fox’s re-election Thursday. Miller, who supported Sabia for president, said minutes after the election result was announced he would not seek a position. He said part of the reason he did not seek re-election was his working relationship with Fox.

New-age Boston Tea Party

The Tea Party rally was in full swing in the middle of Boston Common as former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin spoke Wednesday morning. People with Tea Party merchandise paraded the streets and sidewalks surrounding the park and “Fox News Fan” T-shirts were selling like hot cakes.

RSA e-board complete

After the election of Katie Kerber to Senior Resident Assistant Representative last night, the Resident Student Association (RSA) completed its nearly month-long election process for next year’s executive board. Kerber will act as a liaison between tenured resident assistants (RAs) known as Senior Resident Assistants (SRA), and RSA. She ran uncontested after her opponent, Aliah Qatarneh, stepped down due to a personal commitment that would interfere with the position. On March 24, Pearl Rimon was elected to vice president for programming and Harlan Kaine was elected to alumni affairs coordinator.

Student commencement speaker chosen from 23 applicants, 5 finalists

Michael Paradiso, a senior international business major and past member of Student Government Association (SGA) among other student groups, was chosen as this year’s student commencement speaker. Twenty-three students submitted speeches to the selection committee, and after narrowing the pool down to five finalists, the committee chose Paradiso, said Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs Ed Klotzbier.

Model Arab League places first in nation

Northeastern’s United Nations Association placed first at the National University Model Arab League (NUMAL), beating out teams from 23 other colleges in the nation. Model Arab League, a subsection of the Model United Nations (UN), where each university is assigned a Middle Eastern country and students learn about different aspects of the country ranging from economics, defense and culture. Students then go to conferences where they are broken up into committees with students from other schools to debate about these issues, simulating roles of diplomats on the actual United Nations.

Ryan Fox re-elected SGA President

Student Government Association (SGA) President Ryan Fox was elected for a second term, beating Amanda Sabia, Vice President of Academic Affairs, the SGA senate announced Thursday night. The final count was 1801 votes for Fox, 1704 votes for Sabia and 371 votes of no confidence. According to the SGA record of past presidents, which go back to 1960, Fox is the only SGA president to be elected for a second term.

After a weeklong voting period, the Student Government Association (SGA) garnered votes from 24.85 percent of the student population for its presidential election, satisfying the 20 percent quota necessary to validate the results. Information Services must verify the vote count and the Senate Nominations and Elections Committee (SNEC) must approve campaign budgets before the winner is declared, Chair of SNEC Christian Toczko said. If all goes well, SNEC plans to announce the winner at tonight’s senate meeting at 7 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. The turnout is the highest since direct elections started in 2007, Toczko said.

HEAT week ends

Despite a suspension during fall semester Husky Energy Action Team (HEAT) members said the group’s fourth annual Do it in the Dark, a competition among residence halls to see who uses the least energy in three weeks, was on par with previous years, said Dave Charnuska, HEAT's executive director. “We’ve been in a rut of really bad luck,” he said, citing financial and logistical problems in planning programming and promotions for Do it in the Dark. “We had a bunch of really cool events lined up, but at the last minute, it fell apart.”

Northeastern wins award for globalizing university

Northeastern was one of five colleges and universities awarded the Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization by the Association of International Educators last month. The award, released March 9, assessed 50 to 70 schools on both their accessibility to international students and the international programs they offer, according to members of the award’s selection jury. The schools submitted an application and essay for the jury to consider.

Atheist org wants recognition

A Northeastern atheist student group known as NU Free Thought Society said it has waited for official university recognition for the past year and a half, but university officials say after two attempts from the group, they haven't tried a third time for recognition. In fall 2008, the group requested official recognition from the Office of Student Activities to function with all the resources granted to other organizations. Their original name was the Student Atheists at Northeastern (SANE). Director of Communications Renata Nyul said the Office of Student Activities gave them preliminary approval to begin working with the Student Government Association (SGA).

Kathy Griffin performs for Springfest

Last night, as part of Springfest, comedian and reality TV show star Kathy Griffin performed part of her stand up act. She told several stories and jokes about celebrities such as Andy Dick and Oprah Winfrey. Today for Springfest, there will be a carnival on Centennial Quad during activities period, with a barbecue hosted by Resident Student Association (RSA). Zombieland will air on the West Village Quad at 8 p.m., where there will also be giveaways and free food.
