RSA elects new e-board members

Pearl Rimon was elected to the position of Vice President for Programming and Harlan Kaine was elected to the position of Alumni Affairs Coordinator at the Resident Student Association (RSA) meeting last Wednesday. The election for the position of Senior Residential Assistant Representative has been postponed until the next meeting. There is only one nomination on the table. RSA members were divided over voting on the position Wednesday evening or waiting another two weeks. Matt Soleyn, a RSA member who attended the meeting, said RSA postponed the election because more people might consider running for the position, which was not expected to be filled until summer.

Siclari resigns

Several Student Government Association (SGA) senators sought to impeach and censure – the senate’s way of officially chastising a senator – Vice President for Administration and Public Relations Tim Siclari at their senate meeting Monday after an e-mail showing bias toward Presidential Candidate Amanda Sabia’s campaign was made public.

Debate season finishes

Voting for Student Government Association (SGA) began today on myNEU portal after current President Ryan Fox and Vice President for Academic Affairs Amanda Sabia were nominated to run for the position March 13. The pair has actively campaigned since accepting nominations, they said, and have met publicly for three debates, have answered debate questions via Twitter and met with The News last night for final questions.

Biking to build houses

Northeastern junior Brian Franklin is less than a month away from the ride of his life. On May 14, he will embark on a 3,542-mile journey across the country to raise awareness and support for affordable housing. Franklin will cycle from Nags Head, N.C. to San Diego, Calif. with an organization called Bike and Build. It is a nonprofit organization that raises money for and awareness of affordable housing issues in the United States through cross country cycling trips.

NU admin, prof dies

Dr. Joseph Warren, longtime Northeastern educator and administrator, died Sunday due to complications following a stroke. He was 71. Those close to Dr. Warren said his work as an activist, educator, and community developer left an impact on Northeastern, the City of Boston, and the nation.

Longtime professor Dr. Giessen dies at 77

Dr. Bill Giessen, a chemistry and mechanical engineering professor at Northeastern, died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital March 25 after a long illness. He was 77. Throughout his 40 years of teaching, Dr. Giessen was recognized as an Outstanding Educator of America in American Men and Women of Science, according to The Boston Globe.

The fourth academic year of President Joseph Aoun's tenure -- marked by the third anniversary of his inauguration tomorrow -- was characterized by dramatic change within the university. Some changes met resistance from students, faculty and staff. But, Aoun said in an interview with members of The News' executive board Monday, an institution is constantly changing.

2010-11 Budget released

The university will increase tuition to $36,811, a 2.5 percent net increase, for the 2010-2011 academic year, as announced by members of the senior administration last Wednesday. The increase, which is due in large part to an $11.3 million increase to undergraduate financial aid, is the lowest in 50 years, said Senior Vice President of Enrollment and Student Life Philomena Mantella.

AMEX CEO to speak at May commencement ceremony

Kenneth I. Chenault, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of American Express Company, will deliver the 108th commencement speech to the graduating class of 2010 May 7. “Ken Chenault is an outstanding and admired innovator and business leader of global prominence,” said Renata Nyul, Northeastern director of communications and public relations.
