Kappa Sigma Busts Nuts Against Cancer Kappa Sigma raised over $600 to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) last week in its annual “Busting Our Nuts to Save Yours” fundraiser, according to a press release. From March 8-12, they sold candy, peanuts, and LIVESTRONG bracelets provided by LAF. The event was sponsored by Coca-Cola and Rockstar Energy Drinks.

Students clean up the Fens

The Boston Red Sox, Northeastern students and Fenway residents will be teaming up to clean the Fenway neighborhood as part of Boston Shines 365, Mayor Thomas Menino’s year-round, Boston neighborhood cleanup campaign. The cleanup will take place this Saturday, March 27, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The duties vary from picking up loose pieces of trash in parks and on sidewalks, to scrubbing walls and facades that have been defaced in some way, said Marty Ray, manager of public affairs at the Boston Red Sox.

Fenway Park offers inside look to fans

With the snow gone and April right around the corner, baseball season will soon be in full swing for Boston. Although it is one of the most popular landmarks in New England, Fenway Park has more to offer than meets the eye. Not only can fans cheer on the likes of David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury at a game, but the park offers tours that give visitors a whole new view of the historic field and its home team.

Fox, Sabia run for SGA pres

Student Government Association (SGA) President Ryan Fox and Vice President For Academic Affairs Amanda Sabia were nominated as candidates for next year’s SGA presidency, at the senate meeting Monday. Another member of SGA, Jordan Clark, was denied the ability to run for president after the senate rejected Clark’s move to waive the requirement of being an SGA senator for running a presidential campaign.

Gnomon’s closed

Gnomon Copy, a main vendor for academic-related printing in the Northeastern community, went out of business Friday. Steven Theiss, the owner of the Huntington Avenue copy shop, closed it Friday afternoon after declaring bankruptcy, said the shop’s operations manager, James Coy. Friday afternoon was the first notice employees were given of the shop’s closing.

First ‘Right to Life’ week at NU

The Northeastern University Right to Life organization is currently holding their first Respect Life week on campus, which focuses, among other things, on the controversial topic of abortion. Despite the larger issue, the events during the week, including a former abortionist lecturing against the practice, will be funded by the Student Activities Fee (SAF), a $116 fee all undergraduate students pay each year. The fee is allotted by the Budget Review Committee (BRC) of Student Government Association (SGA).

New, old Northeastern buildings flood, leak from recent rainfall

More than 10 buildings throughout campus experienced water damage from the recent heavy rainstorms, including International Village, which opened just over six months ago, according to Stanley Duci, director of customer service for facilities. The first area to experience flooding is where Mugar, Dodge and Ell Hall buildings all meet, said Duci.

Student Government Association (SGA) will “invade” the library quad today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. the event will coincide with SGA’s election theme, “Party in the SGA.” The height of the invasion will come during activities period, when a DJ will play music and BBQ will be served.

RSA elects new president

The Resident Student Association (RSA) elected Chucker Berds, the current vice president for finance, as its president for next year at last night’s RSA meeting. He defeated Julie Rizzolo, the current vice president for collaboration in the only contested election of the five-and-a-half-hour meeting. The vote tally was not released. Elections for three of RSA’s six vice presidents were also held.

College Democrats and Republicans debate foreign, domestic policy

Political parties will face off on campus tonight when the Northeastern University College Democrats and the Northeastern University College Republicans debate. Topics will include foreign policy with regards to Iran, private school vouchers, immigration reform and campaign finance. It is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. in 305 Shillman Hall. “We wanted to come up with topics that are really important that have been really overlooked,” said Michael Sabo, president of the Northeastern University College Republicans. He said the topics had been decided in a meeting between executive members of both clubs.

Government ‘hashes’ it out

The Massachusetts State Joint Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing to discuss Senate Bill 1801, “An Act to regulate and tax the cannabis industry” March 2. The bill and its companion bill, House Bill 2929, seek to legally regulate the commercial production and distribution of marijuana for adults over the age of 21. The premise of the bill takes on the form of the current law that regulates the production and sale of alcohol.
