Government ‘hashes’ it out

The Massachusetts State Joint Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing to discuss Senate Bill 1801, “An Act to regulate and tax the cannabis industry” March 2. The bill and its companion bill, House Bill 2929, seek to legally regulate the commercial production and distribution of marijuana for adults over the age of 21. The premise of the bill takes on the form of the current law that regulates the production and sale of alcohol.

Aoun plans to stay at NU

President Joseph Aoun was listed as a potential candidate for the University Of Massachusetts (UMass) presidency position that will open up in June of 2011, as reported in the Boston Globe last Tuesday. Director of Communications Renata Nyul declined to comment on the length and nature of Aoun’s contract with Northeastern University, saying it’s a “longstanding university policy to not comment on personal information.”

International Women’s Day inspires organization

Pathfinder International, a non-profit group, created a series of videos to raise awareness for the lack of modern contraceptives and hosted it on girl2woman.org. Every time a video gets shared, $1 is raised. The group gave the site a one week challenge: reach 200,000 video shares. By Monday, International Women’s Day and the final day of the week-long challenge, the goal was not met.

Drake to headline Springfest

It's the "NUpocalypse." The Center for University Programs (CUP) released this year's line-up for the upcoming Springfest concert Wednesday afternoon via posts on social networking sites. The news, that students would be able to see main acts Drake, 3OH!3, and K-OS as well as comedian Kathy Griffin, spread quickly over Facebook and Twitter, where reaction was decidedly mixed.
