Last week, Northeastern took another step toward bolstering its reputation as an environmentally-friendly school. Northeastern joined New Balance, the City of Boston and a dozen other companies and institutions in sponsoring the launch of Hubway last week, a bike sharing system across the city.

Congress, in conjunction with the President of the United States, is currently attempting to find common ground regarding the nature of the federal budget. The fiscal future of our country hangs in the midst. The focal point: whether raising taxes or cutting spending should be the fundamental means to reduce our deficits and lead us into another era of American prosperity. Republicans want serious and responsible cuts without raising unnecessary taxes. Democrats insist raising taxes with minimal cuts is of intelligent design. The national discussion on the budget is in and of itself, I believe, a vivid representation of the divisive philosophy and nature of the American people.

The past month has been a kind one to Northeastern athletics. J.J. Barea, a 2006 graduate and point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, became the first Northeastern graduate to win an NBA Championship after a Finals that saw Barea outperform basketball legend LeBron James in several games. And Jamie Oleksiak, star defenseman for the Huskies, was selected 14th overall in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars, the highest a Northeastern alumnus has ever been drafted.

In the office in Ell Hall where Vice President for Student Affairs Ed Klotzbier spends his time are two pictures: one, a black and white photo of Northeastern’s campus in the 1980s, blanketed with parking lots; and next to it, a near-identical color picture of Northeastern now, filled to the brim with campus buildings.

On behalf of the Student Government Association (SGA), we would like to express our gratitude to Vice President for Student Affairs Ed Klotzbier for his dedication and the many sacrifices he has made to improve student life over the past eight years. From being a constant presence at athletic events, to speaking at dozens of student group meetings, to keeping an open-door policy for all, Ed has been an unparalleled presence in student affairs and will be greatly missed.

One of my fondest memories as an undergrad at Northeastern was when Jose Juan Barea debuted at the Fleet Center in 2007, as the Dallas Mavericks’ second backup point guard. Northeastern locked down hundreds of balcony seats and gave tickets away to students, along with shirts with Barea's name and number on the back (another great move, put together by the departing Ed Klotzbier).When Barea hit the floor in the fourth quarter, the whole section of students exploded. He played seven minutes, scored five points, and the Mavs beat the Celtics, 109-95.
