Spotlight Column: The artist formerly known as Kanye West

December 4, 2013
In my travels as a college student, I’ve noticed that inebriated 20-somethings can be fairly predictable when it comes to topics of conversation. Movies from the 90s (particularly Space Jam) and the rules of beer pong are crowd favorites, but no subject causes more controversy among millennials than Kanye West. Brought on by a Kanye track playing in the background or an off-hand Kardashian reference, the almighty Yeezus debate can divide rooms of friends quicker than Moses and the Red Sea.

Column: 22 reasons why I love college

November 20, 2013
It seems that these days, Facebook is just a forum to share BuzzFeed, Thought Catalog and even the occasional Her Campus article on our friends’ timelines. I can’t say I hate it. I, just like 98 percent of the human race on the Internet, enjoy lists.

“The Book Thief” sheds light on a dark story

November 13, 2013
“The Book Thief”: a World War II movie told from the perspective of a little girl who finds her voice through words. Sounds like a spin-off of the heart-wrenching tale of Anne Frank. But it is not, rather far from it actually.

See the city from a new perspective at Higher Ground, Boston’s first rooftop farm. Occupying 55,000 square feet atop the Boston Design Center, the farm grows an assortment of produce including greens, tomatoes and herbs, which are then sold to nearby restaurants. Support the local produce movement and learn more about agrarian operations by helping out at the final volunteer day of the season. Saturday’s tasks include transporting plant debris to be taken to City Soil for composting. Get your green thumb ready, but don’t be afraid of getting it a little dirty. 1 Design Center Place; 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; free; higher-ground-farm.com.

Spotlight Column: Musings of a terrible patient

November 13, 2013
As the X-ray machine projected a grid across my aching left arm, I used my free hand to hold the back of my hospital gown together in the hopes of preventing an untimely nip slip. It is a vivid memory I’m sure will not fade over time. The pose the X-ray technician told me to hold beneath the large camera was awkward and painful. “Hold your arm like this,” she said as she shifted my elbow and my face contorted in pain. “Perfect! Only five more to go.”
