Event Calendar: April 10-16

April 10, 2014
Shaving is saving at the St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event to benefit children’s cancer research. Dillon’s Restaurant & Bar will host the event, where volunteers can sign up to have their heads shaved in solidarity with children who have lost hair due to chemotherapy treatments. Volunteers raise money before the event, similar to a walk-a-thon or other fundraising event, which goes towards the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The organization holds events throughout the country and raised over $58,000 last year to go towards cancer research. Whether you’re ready to sport a bald new look or just want to support those who are being shaven, come join the hundreds of other volunteers and make a difference.

“I, too, am Harvard” spreads worldwide

April 2, 2014
The concept is simple enough. Students take a photograph of themselves holding a sign that describes an incident of racism they experienced at Harvard University. But the effect is great. Scroll through a few pages of the Tumblr site dedicated to the “I, Too, Am Harvard” movement and it is clear that these students are fighting a tough battle, one that has been underway for centuries and is still far from being won.

NU Stage gets angsty with “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”

April 2, 2014
Over the top. That is the only way to fully describe NU Stage’s performance of the rock musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.” But how else could a play about the seventh president captivate anyone’s attention for 90 straight minutes? Historical non-fiction lends itself well to 2,000 page tomes, but less so to live-action performances; hence the need for the punk rock angle.

Review: “Modern Vampires of the City,” Vampire Weekend’s coming-of-age album

April 2, 2014
The myth of vampires has seen a wave of resurgence in the past decade or so, largely due to prominence in children’s books, movies and cable TV. We know the rules for the famous folklore, one of which being their proud agelessness. But does that make them blessed or cursed, trapped forever young or suffering as infinitely wise? The latest from Vampire Weekend, “Modern Vampires of the City,” attacks such a notion with a bloodthirsty rigor without losing a drop of delicacy, as smooth and classy as some of our sanguinarian idols.

Column: On Culture

April 2, 2014
I perpetually wonder if there is a reliable method for measuring a person’s cultural aptitude. Is it a formula consisting of the number of stamps in one’s passport (s) multiplied by the number of languages they are fluent in (l) plus the number of current events they are read up on (c)? Perhaps this is already a BuzzFeed quiz with results like “You Probably Sat in the Back during Model UN” or “You’ve Been on Four Peace Corps Missions.” Does it come with the territory like having diplomat parents or majoring in international affairs? Or can it be acquired like getting to know the locals when you travel or choosing anthropology as an elective because of general interest?

Bring on the middle school sleepover flashbacks at Boston Pillow Fight 2014. Returning for its eighth year, the citywide fight is organized as a part of International Pillow Fight Day, giving everyone the chance to let loose and let out their inner child. There are just a few simple guidelines, like no bean bag, zippered or feathered pillows and no hitting anyone who isn’t holding a pillow, with costumes as a highly encouraged option. The event is organized by the Banditos Misteriosos, a group dedicated to bringing fun and unusual activities to the public for free, adding a dose of excitement to the everyday lives of Bostonians.

Rapper G-Eazy on music, style, inspiration

March 26, 2014
With a national tour, collaborations with artists like Hoodie Allen, Skizzy Mars and E-40 and an upcoming album, rapper G-Eazy is garnering a great deal of attention on the indie rap scene. The Oakland, Calif. native and Loyola University New Orleans graduate boasts a sound somewhere between Macklemore and Bob Dylan, and is touring the US promoting his new album. The up-and-comer stopped in Boston this past weekend for a sold-out show at the Paradise Rock Club. Before the show, G called in from Grand Rapids, Mich. to talk with The News about his success and his plans for the future.

Review: “The Lego Movie” a must see

March 26, 2014
They have constructed enormous life-like buildings and figures, had entire theme parks dedicated to them, been the subject of various books and video games and been scattered on everyone’s living room floor at some point. Now, the iconic Lego bricks star on the big screen in “The Lego Movie.” No longer do families have to suffer through two hours at the movie theater to satisfy the younger generations as this hilarious, quirky, self-reverential and heartwarming movie is a must-see for people of all ages.

Ben & Jerry’s “Cores” flavors at NU

March 20, 2014
From classics like “Chunky Monkey” and “Cherry Garcia” to wilder creations such as the potato chip-laden “Late Night Snack,” Vermont-based ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s has been on the cutting edge of the frozen dessert market since its inception in 1978. Once again, they have revolutionized the game with their new product line, fittingly dubbed the “Cores,” which are now available at Shaw’s supermarket.
