Frost Ice Bar keeps patrons 21 degrees cool, 363 days a year

September 12, 2013
Earlier this month, Boston gave a whole new meaning to the phrase, “pass me a cold one” with the opening of the world’s largest permanent ice bar in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. And no, this is not a bar that sells ice, like tea or oxygen bars, but rather a bar made completely of ice. It may be 75 degrees outside, but it is 21 degrees year-round in Frost Ice Bar.

Column: Kiss and tell

September 12, 2013
I guess a girl should never kiss and tell, but I’m breaking that rule for this column. One time, and one time only — to tell the epic tale that is “My First Kiss.”

Mix Fest 2013 will play host to three major headliners this weekend: Gavin Degraw, The Backstreet Boys and Of Monsters and Men. While these three acts may have nothing in common, all three will have listeners fangirling in their seats by the end of the sets. All are invited to attend, and the Hatch Memorial Shell, where the concert takes place, is located along the river, with beautiful views and lots of room to lie out a blanket and get comfy. Use of public transport is encouraged, Charles/MGH on the Red Line and Science Park on the Green Line are the closest T stops to the show. DCR Hatch Memorial Shell; 4-8 p.m.; free; mix1041.cbslocal.com.

Column: You look ridiculous, Miley

September 5, 2013
As the social fabric of Egypt unravels, the Syrian government poisons its own people and the US government contemplates military intervention, the American public has been asking themselves the most poignant question of all: What in the world is going on with Miley Cyrus?

Welcome back to Boston! In honor of the return of college students and the second day of classes (but probably really just because it was a logical date), Pinkberry will welcome Bostonians to its new location in Davis Square. While the grand opening isn’t technically until Friday, anyone who stops by between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday will receive a free sample of the tasty treats available at Pinkberry. So take a friend and explore a new part of the city. If free froyo isn’t motivation enough, then what is? 263 Elm St., Somerville; 5:30-8:30 p.m.; free; pinkberry.com.

Northeastern gets busy for back to school: movies, tryouts, auditions

September 5, 2013
The first few weeks of school are a blur: between the confused freshman, first day of classes, scrambling to find a work study job and fighting the endless crowds at Rebecca’s, many of Northeastern’s September events fall to the wayside. Although they’re often overlooked for back-to-school parties and marathon Skype sessions with summer friends, there are NU activities to fill the fall calendars of incoming and returning students.

Celebrity typewriters at the Gallery 360

September 5, 2013
From Lennon to Welles, Hemingway to Rooney, struggling artists of decades past all had one thing in common: they had to get their writing careers started somewhere. And in this particular case, they all started at the keys of a classic typewriter — typewriters that are temporarily on display at the Gallery 360 in the Curry Student Center.

“We’re The Millers” hits comedy high note

August 14, 2013
Despite a plot line that was hard to take seriously, even for a comedy, and previews that didn’t generate quite the hype expected, summer blockbuster “We’re The Millers” has managed to fare well at No. 2 in the box office. With big names like former “Saturday Night Live” star Jason Sudeikis, former “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston and “Valentine’s Day” star Emma Roberts, the movie set the standards high for itself.

Column: Love and hate for Mumford & Sons

August 14, 2013
I don’t “get” Mumford & Sons. I’m sorry, I just don’t.

Column: Remembering Pee Wee’s Playhouse

July 31, 2013
Children are like sponges. What you’re surrounded by as a child influences who you become as an adult. The little boy playing with GI Joe toys may later be a soldier, or the little girl with Barbies may grow up to be Miss America. I, however, was attracted to far less stereotypical forms of entertainment as a kid. I liked making movies, building Lego skyscrapers and experimenting with arts and crafts. So when it was time to plop in front of the TV for a snack and a video I only had one preference: Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.
