September 8, 2011

Column: Drawing the Line

September 8, 2011
A new school year has begun and while it may be my last semester at Northeastern, it seems like some things will never change. In just the past week I’ve seen examples on campus that show neglect for athletics. On Monday, DogHouse members attempted to bring some new students to Sweeney Field to see our field hockey team take on nationally-ranked Michigan State. However, an NUPD officer spoiled their plans when he turned away the new students and told them to attend a welcome week barbecue which was not mandatory. The officer had allegedly received orders from another member of administration, but hearing about the incident still disheartened me.

Column: On the road again

If your favorite team only played one home game in the first two months of the season, would you be disappointed? What if I told you that this team had a say in the scheduling process and still only scheduled one game in front of their home fans? This scenario is playing out behind the scenes of Northeastern men’s basketball. Pooling from a combination of rumors, confirmed dates and insider sources, The News has learned that the Huskies will have only one or two home games during the fall semester, the fewest since joining the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2005. The second date is dependent on whether the CAA’s December game will be at Matthews Arena or not.

August 17, 2011
When women’s soccer head coach Tracey Leone first saw senior Veronica Napoli play it was from the opposing team’s side when she was coaching for Harvard in 2009, and she viewed the speedy forward as the ultimate dangerous player. “We hated playing against her because she’s such a threat,” Leone said. “She can break a game open at any second.”

Men’s Hockey: Oleksiak leaves, signs with Saginaw Spirit

July 27, 2011
By Anthony Gulizia, News Staff The chance that 6-foot-7-inch, 240-pound defenseman Jamie Oleksiak would go unnoticed by NHL teams was slim-to-none. And when the Huskies’ looming blueliner was drafted by the Dallas Stars as the 14th overall pick in the first round of the NHL Draft June 24, it wasn’t a question of if he would leave – it was a matter of when – especially after coach Greg Cronin parted ways with the team
