Men’s Hockey: Huskies cut BU season short, advance to Garden

It’s been a long time since Northeastern has defeated conference rival Boston University in the Hockey East playoffs. Ever since coach Greg Cronin’s arrival on Huntington Avenue in 2005, Northeastern has gone 4-16-5 in games with BU.

Men’s Hockey: Huskies lose 5-2 in penalty-filled game two

Head coach Greg Cronin could only shake his head in disbelief during a third period call that went against his Northeastern squad, which was down 4-2 to Boston University and facing its 10th man-down opportunity on Friday night. It was that type of game for the Huskies, who are third in the nation in penalty minutes per game and couldn’t get rolling during the second game of the Hockey East quarterfinals at Agganis Arena, losing 5-2 to the No. 13 Terriers.

Men’s Hockey: Huskies nip Terriers in game one

After all the trouble Boston University has given the mens hockey team over the past few seasons, the Huskies will step into Agganis Arena Friday night one game away from ending the Terrier’s season. Northeastern took 10 penalties but held No. 13 BU to 1-9 on the power play as the Huskies skated to a 4-2 victory in the first leg of the Hockey East quarterfinals Thursday night.

After splitting final Hockey East regular season series with Boston University, the men’s hockey team will head back down Commonwealth Avenue to Agganis Arena tonight to start a best-of-three playoff series against the Terriers.

Basketball: Huskies drop to Delaware in first round of tournament

The final buzzer sounded and Delaware escaped with a 60-58 victory to advance to the CAA Tournament quarterfinals. The loss ends Northeastern’s season at 11-20 overall.

Baseball: Ferguson, McNelis aid wins

After dropping their first eight decisions down south, the Huskies found a way to emerge from a losing streak by topping St. Bonaventure 9-4.

Women’s Hockey: Huskies drop title shot

Despite a record-setting tournament performance from junior goaltender Florence Schelling, the women’s hockey team couldn’t cash in on its first ever trip to the the Hockey East Championship last weekend and lost 3-1 to No. 7 Boston College at Walter Brown Arena.

Indoor Track & Field: Staples sets school record

Senior Andrew Staples made Northeastern history by leaping 23 feet, 7.5 inches in the long jump to become the first Husky to win the long jump event at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championship. His teammate, freshman Kaylin Miranda, finished 18th in the same event with a distance of 22 feet, 0.25 inches. The men’s team earned 10 points from this event, which contributed to their 24th place finish out of 52 teams.

As the men’s hockey team enters a big series against Boston University this weekend in the Hockey East quarterfinals, head coach Greg Cronin can only hope to achieve the amount of success the other varsity hockey team at Northeastern had last weekend.

Player of the Week: Ryan Pierson

Freshman forward/center Ryan Pierson was named to the all-conference men’s basketball rookie team last Thursday. He is Northeastern’s first all-rookie selection since senior Chaisson Allen four years ago. Pierson’s performance this past season has earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Men’s Hockey: Cronin and O’Connell back behind the bench

Tuesday afternoon athletic director Peter Roby and the Northeastern athletic department announced the end of the suspensions to men’s hockey head coach Greg Cronin and assistant Albie O’Connell. The suspensions, which were indefinite as of February 18, were resulting from a NCAA recruiting violation that the program committed which was related to excessive telephone and text messaging with prospective student-athletes.

Baseball: Huskies off to rocky 0-6 start

Since falling to the Sox 13-2, which didn’t count the Huskies are 0-6 on the season. In those six games, the squad has been outscored 62-to-21. The most recent loss came last night, when the team was no-hit and fell to Florida International 4-0.
