Even in a city where under 21-year-olds make up almost one-quarter of the revolving population, sometimes finding underage entertainment in Boston can be a challenge.
Whether students chose to partake in underage “substance” consumption or more sober activities, age can be a factor.
Good Clean Fun
Normally, hanging out with large rats can be hazardous to your health, but just off the Wellington T stop on the Orange Line is an exception. Chuck E Cheese’s, about a 10 minute walk from the station, is open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and until 10 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays.
According to an employee, Sarah, Chuck E Cheese’s is now giving tokens away for grades — all ages are included, even college students, she said. Bring a report card to the location, and Chuck E Cheese’s hands over tokens in support of education.
Voted Best Movie Theater in the Best of NU 2003, AMC Fenway 13 offers entertainment for all ages. A popular night at the movies is their Saturday night midnight movie series. Last Saturday, the theater screened “Army of Darkness.”
To get out of the shadow of NU’s campus, students can go to the Coolidge Corner Theatre, in Brookline, off of the C line. They also feature a Saturday midnight movie, last week’s showing was “Wet Hot American Summer.”
Sassy Suggestions
If these suggestions are too tame; ladies throw on some black sex pants and fellas spray on your “Axe” cologne and go to the clubs. Most night clubs feature 18 or 19 plus nights. The breeding ground for clubs is Landsdowne Street, but to stray further, go to the Theater District.
The Roxy, located at 279 Tremont St., is 18 plus on Friday nights, according to Joe Hassell, a sophomore communications major, who works in the office at the club during the day.
The Tremont Street address has four clubs under one roof.
“It’s the same building; The Matrix is downstairs, Encore is downstairs, but it’s like a piano bar so it’s not really a college kid type place, and there’s Caprice, also,” Hassell, who is over 21, said. “The Roxy is the best one. Friday nights they have hip-hop, and it’s a lot of fun — there are about 1,200 to 1,500 people here.”
Hassell said when he was a freshman he would go to these clubs, but he also opted for a fake ID.
“I had a fake ID, but you gotta make sure you get a real license, that isn’t you,” he said. “It has to look like you — find older friends and offer them 50 bucks.”
On Landsdowne Street, most clubs are 19 plus for girls and 21 plus for guys.
“[Guys] get a lot of life benefits,” said 19-year-old freshman Rosh Bindra, a freshman biology major about the age limitations. “We need some benefits.”
Musical nights
Another option for an underage evening would be to attend a show. Most shows are 18 plus in the Boston and Cambridge area.
“I went to one on Thursday with the Street Light Manifesto, a Ska band” said Greg Whitney, a freshman undecided major.
The Middle East, Club Passim and TT the Bear’s Place in Cambridge offer 18 plus shows nightly. In Boston, Avalon and Axis are examples of 18 plus concert venues.
