How many times this weekend when you were partying with your friends did you think to yourself, “I hope Northeastern doesn’t find out.”
Well now you should, because “big brother” is watching, waiting to tell on you.
On a ride-along with Boston Police, Vice President for Student Affairs Ed Klozbier and Associate Director of Community Relations Jeff Doggett (size is important in titles), watched as the police broke up 18 parties on Mission Hill. They asked around to find out who was a Northeastern student, and between 20 and 25 students now face punishment from the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.
Mission Hill is the stomping ground and/or home for many college students – Northeastern students among them. The residents in and around the community have complained about the behavior of college students for years, and finally, Northeastern decided to take things into their own hands.
Because, per usual, it’s all about image.
For at least the second time in less than a year (think Springfest) Northeastern has hung its students out to dry in favor of community relations. Apparently, our $30,000 tuition doesn’t buy us any favor in the administration’s eyes.
Maybe Northeastern thinks we all need an extra set of parents to punish us when we do wrong. Maybe they really think this kind of punishment will quell off-campus parties and underage drinking.
We can’t tell you what they are thinking.
But, if Northeastern is looking to be No. 1 in “Striking Fear into Students,” then they are certainly achieving their goal in this task. Now, not only are you in danger of the police when you drink off campus, but Northeastern has the right to enforce punishment as well.
But you know this already, it’s in the Student Code of Conduct. If you are caught stealing a car in Texas, or jaywalking in Portland, Maine, Northeastern can make your life even more miserable.
Look, we have no problem with busting underage drinkers and loud house parties, that’s what the police are for. And Student Government Association President Andres Vargas, and other students in leadership and scholarship positions, should be held to a higher standard because they represent Northeastern publicly. But to send Northeastern’s vice presidents to do the dirty work widens the already large disconnect between students and the ones that control them.
Mission Hill isn’t just Northeastern students. Massachusetts College of Art, Wentworth, Emerson, etc. all have students up on the Hill acting stupid every night. Why should Northeastern students alone get twice the punishment?
Forget talking about parties on campus anymore. Think about making up hand signals if you want to have friends over, don’t dare breathe a word about it around this place.
Vargas may be the first to fall, but don’t expect him to be the last.
