Women’s soccer goalie Mariel Wilner may just be a sophomore and a newcomer to the women’s soccer team at Northeastern, but with two shutouts and an America East Player of the Week nod already under her belt, her name is quickly spreading.
She has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week for her efforts.
“It’s still early [in the season] and there’s a lot left to be done still,” Wilner said of the America East award, which was announced Monday. “It’s still really early and it’s still my job to see this team do well.”
The Huskies tied Harvard University 1-1 in double overtime last Friday at Ohiri Field in Cambridge. Wilner was in net for the total 110 minutes, stopping 10 shots and allowing just one in the first half.
Through eight games (6-1-1), it was the most saves for the Huskies by a goalie.
Wilner also was in net for two Husky shutouts. In her first time ever in goal for the Huskies against Jacksonville University on Aug. 27, Wilner recorded the shutout.
Then, against Sacred Heart University on Sept. 12, Wilner came up big again in a 2-0 win.
“The defense has been awesome,” Wilner said. “I really like the girls I’m working with, and I give all the credit to the four [defenders] in front of me and the 11 playing.”
She was in net for Monday’s 3-2 overtime win over the College of the Holy Cross, stopping three shots and insuring a Husky win in the extra period.
“It’s definitely a good record for the beginning of the season,” Wilner said. “We have Boston College coming up and Ryder University, so we’ll be facing some tough teams. It’s definitely a good start for any team, though, when you play eight games and lose just one.”
Wilner, a native of Owings Mills, Md. is a transfer from the University of Maryland. As a freshman, she started the first 12 games of the season for her team, posting a 1.65 goals per game average, while stopping 63.8 percent of shots on goal.
