I was on the phone with my father this weekend and he pointed out a story in the Sept. 22 issue of The Northeastern News. He noticed the story of the girls who last year had a bet to see who could have sex in the shower first (SEXcapades, pg. 13). He wasn’t offended or anything, just shocked to see the paper printed this. The story promotes one night stands and unprotected sex, which a school should never do.
The thing he was most surprised about was how anti-drinking the paper is. The Orientation Leaders and Student Government Association board members are under so much scrutiny for simply drinking at a party. Yes, they’re supposed to be a good example, but we’re all human, and many of us enjoy drinking. This school is so unbelievably strict because of alcohol it’s ridiculous.
Our parents were allowed to drink at 18 but now the government is telling us we are less responsible than they were at this age.
Reading the Crime Log, my father and I had to laugh at all the drinking arrests and violations and then the huge ad for Huntington Liquors on the same page. How hypocritical is that I ask you? You’re willing to exploit students’ names and actions for drinking, but then you give them the hottest places to buy alcohol on the same page.
I think the school and especially the paper need to get their priorities straight. There is nothing wrong with sex and there is nothing wrong with beer. So don’t print great sex stories that promote promiscuity and then scold students for drinking.
