Sonia Elizabeth Aguilar was 13 years old when she was first jailed for trying to cross the American border. It wasn’t until her second attempt that she successfully fled her poverty-stricken community in El Salvador and mastered the English language.
Aguilar, now a published author, is just one of the many stories that has made the New Bostonian Community Day a success. The Office of New Bostonians, which was created by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, has hosted this event since 1998.
