Northeastern will receive $150,000 in compensation from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst as part of a settlement reached between the universities and former Northeastern head football coach Don Brown.
UMass Chancellor John Lombardi will also issue a public apology to Northeastern, according to a statement from the NU Office of Sports Information.
The $150,000 will foot the costs of finding a replacement coach.
In addition, Brown will be suspended from the first three 2004 UMass games he is slated to coach.
On Feb. 9, Brown accepted a position as head coach at UMass, which was in breach of the contract he had with NU through 2008. UMass violated the contract by attempting to contact Brown while he was still coaching at NU.
A judge issued an injunction prohibiting Brown from coaching at UMass, citing he had “willfully and intentionally breached his contract with Northeastern.”
The injunction was later lifted when both universities agreed in principle to settle the case, the statement said.
