The Northeastern men’s track program’s newest impact performer, Luis Moreira, could easily be described as a prized acquisition.
Does the Somerville native have experience in state — even region-wide — competitions where an entire season of preparation is on the line? Try a New England hurdling championship trophy as a senior.
Does the hurdler/jumper know how to set a record? Or better yet, keep setting records? The Somerville High grad owns the school’s records in the 55 hurdles, the 110 hurdles and the indoor long jump.
“I feel really good; this is my second year with the team, I’ve trained with them before,” the freshman said. “The coaches have been waiting for me and know what I’m capable of, and I’m going to work even harder.”
After another shining week in another high-profile meet, the Snowflake Classic, Moreira has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
Moreira finished first in the 110 hurdles at 14.78, while finishing second in the long jump (21’08.75) and second in the triple jump (44’2).
He has made the transition into the college track scene look easy, performing well in even the most important meets for the Huskies.
Moreira won the 55 hurdles (7.52) while taking third in the long jump (21’11.75) and third in the triple jump (45’5) at Northeastern’s one-point America East Championship win.
As one might expect from a stellar and experienced high school career, Moreira isn’t fazed by the amount of talent around him.
“I never get intimidated by the huge meets,” he said. “I think my performances get better. At the America East Championships, we really came together as a team. We all went out to dinner and got a great win.”
Moreira has already set new standards for himself.
“I want to go for 24 flat in the jump, and 14 flat in the hurdles,” he said.
With the steady statistics so far for Moreira, those performances may very soon become a reality.
