Sherman Hart often finds himself on the edge when a 4×100 relay begins.
“The 4×100 is one of those events where as a coach, you just close your eyes and hope everything happens right, especially with the handoffs,” said the Northeastern track coach.
This past weekend at the USF Invitational in Tampa, Fla., Hart saw his four Huskies execute the event perfectly as Shanae Henry, Jordine Kimbrel, Tramaine Shaw and Ahndraea Allen set a new school record time of 46.03.
The sophomore, junior, freshman and senior, respectively, have been named The Northeastern News Players of the Week.
“I really expected them to run well,” Hart said. “I knew whatever the record was, we could break it, because we have a really solid group in that event.”
Just the third competitive meet of the spring season, it was also the Huskies’ second trip to Florida, which Allen said is always a challenge.
“There weren’t that many teams from the north, and it’s usually easier for the south teams to run down there,” said Allen, who ran the anchor leg. “We were able to go down there and do what we had to do.”
Sure enough, the teams the Huskies beat out were seven straight Florida schools, starting with Florida International (46.28) and Florida Atlantic (46.64).
“This team is used to breaking records,” Hart said. “It’s just one step closer to our ultimate goal of making it to the regionals and doing well in the conference. We’re really running well for this early point of the season.”
Allen added the quartet didn’t even realize they had broken the school record when the event was completed.
“We didn’t even know we had broken it, which is a good thing,” Allen said. “It shows we’ve really been running well together.”
Allen, a senior and leader on the team, came into the spring season having won America East’s Most Outstanding Track Performer and the America East Coaches Awards at the America East Championships this winter.
Her expertise in sprint events, including the 55, 200 and 400-meter dash, and her role as the final sprinter in the relay have helped the group continue to improve.
Hart also recently praised the efforts of freshman Shaw.
“[Charity Briggs] and Shaw, they have both been instrumental as freshmen,” the coach said.
