Shhh.
There is a concert this weekend, but there is no reason to riot, or to be alarmed. Nothing happened here. Nothing.
Or so the Northeastern administration would have you believe.
Make no mistake: NU would like to distance itself as best as it can from the “incident” that occurred after last year’s Super Bowl. In fact, they’ve made no mention of the it at all. The PR powerhouse that churned out the now infamous “the world is watching us” statement must be hoping the world has a short memory.
But for all of you, i.e. freshmen and those who were securely placed under a rock last semester, who don’t know what happened, here’s a short primer:
The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. Sometime before, after or during that event, some kids got drunk and did what drunk kids do: act stupidly. Some cars were flipped, some stuff was broken. Most notably, a non-Northeastern student was hit by the car of an alleged drunk driver (also NOT a Northeastern student) and died near campus. In the aftermath, last year’s Springfest concert, featuring Ludacris, was canceled. The debate of the punishment fitting the crime was a thorn in the paw of students and administrators alike.
The university has taken a “We’ll ask but won’t tell” policy for Saturday’s upcoming concert. They’ll ask you not to riot, but won’t tell you why they would be concerned in the first place. Because when you really think about it, why would students riot at a concert?
We think the university, as well as the students, need to step up their behavior. We promise we’ll act better if you promise you’ll be better prepared to handle us. Sound good?
When Springfest was canceled the Council for University Programs’ first major concert became a bust. So they regrouped and prepared to get a comparable concert for the fall, as to not let the students down.
So, have fun at the Wyclef concert. Or was it Busta Rhymes? Where did Method Man come from? Is Jimmy Buffet still in town?
Now that’s something to be upset about. Poor CUP. They try, they really do.
But who knows who will be there when you find your spot in Matthews Arena. Seems Wyclef was a rush to judgment, since CUP put up the banner on Forsyth Street before he even signed a contract.
With all the missteps taken into consideration, the long awaited “big name” concert that will take place on Saturday should be a hit.
And please, students of Northeastern, don’t make this another incident NU will have to sweep under the rug. The baseball playoffs haven’t even started yet.
