At the end of every school year The News sets out to find what students consider their favorites in and around campus, spanning a number of categories.
Last year guided students on a tour from the Best Place to Eat on Campus (Chicken Lou’s) to the Biggest Disappointment (cancellation of Springfest). While this year has also had its share of disappointments, few can deny it has been one of the best years in recent history, not just for Northeastern, but for the city of Boston as well.
Over the past two semesters students have seen – and are still putting up with – major improvements to the campus and the city. The new SpeareCommons offers many services all in one place, even movie rentals. Stetson West has been revamped into the kind of dining hall college students dream of, with its multiple plasma screen televisions, stir-fry and brick-oven pizza. Still causing annoyances, the final touches on West Village and the Big Dig are approaching completion. As a result, both the campus and city will become more navigable, and with West Village F there will be a new contender for Best Freshman Housing.
Without forgetting the loss caused by subsequent riots, the Red Sox and Patriots found success and now boast the titles of champions. The Northeastern baseball team took on those same Red Sox over Spring Break this March, taking away a new experience despite failing to get a hit in the contest. The men’s basketball team had its share of ups and downs as it reached the conference finals but was ultimately limited by injury and suspension, while the men’s hockey team gave Boston University a run for its money in the Beanpot.
Boston hosted the Democratic National Convention, attracting thousands of people including a vast number of celebrities and government officials such as former President Bill Clinton. Not to be outdone with political attention, Northeastern induced the resignation of campus leaders, including Student Goverment Association President Andres Vargas, after an underage drinking scandal.
Going with a more optimistic approach, this year’s Best of NU doesn’t include any “Biggest Screw-up” or “Worst of” polls, like when last year’s winter was dubbed the crummiest time to be stuck on campus. Readers also weren’t asked to decide if Mos Def let them down more than Wyclef. In fact, it was indeed Springfest that took home the prize for the best school bash. Students faced another new direction by judging a certain “book” to be the Most Useful College Web Site.
Hundreds of Northeastern University students voted; here are the results — The Best of NU.
