Huskies at Olympic tryouts
The U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team has announced its rosters for the upcoming Olympic selection camps, which will determine the team being sent to Torino, Italy, in February.
Three former Huskies, goaltender Chanda Gunn, forward Brooke Whitney and NU Hall of Fame member Shelley Looney were picked to attend the tryouts.
A familiar face will be guiding the players through the camp. Former Husky men’s hockey coach Ben Smith (1991-96) will serve as head of the U.S. staff.
Gunn’s honors included being named a finalist twice for the Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the most outstanding female college hockey player in the nation. Whitney, a two-time All-American, ranks four in points and third in goals in the all-time Husky record books. Looney is looking to make her third Olympic appearance after stints in 1998 and the silver medal-winning 2002 campaign.
Emanuele is a Cape All-Star
Chris Emanuele’s athletic prowess in centerfield has been something the Northeastern baseball team has relied upon the past three seasons.
His success during the 2005 season extended to the highly prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League this summer as he was named a League All-Star, playing for the Harwich Mariners.
Nearly flawless in the outfield with one error, Emanuele has also been a force at the plate, staying consistent with a .312 batting average, while hitting two home runs and driving in 16.
A threat on the base paths as well with nine stolen bases, Emanuele’s hard-nosed, competitive attitude has translated well in a league that has produced such MLB talent as Ken Griffey, Jr., Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra.
Parks, Roseborough honored
Football seniors Cory Parks, a wide receiver, and Mike Roseborough, an offensive lineman, were named to the Atlantic-10 preseason all-conference team last week.
Both were honored last year, as Parks was named to the first team and Roseborough to the second.
Parks, who is currently second in Husky history in each main wide receiver offensive category (catches, yards, touchdowns), will likely be Northeastern’s key offensive threat.
Roseborough is an intimidating presence at six-foot-three-inch, 305 pounds, and made his way into the right tackle position as a redshirt freshman, maintaining the spot ever since with his consistent play.
Rossiter hired in California
Former WRBB Sports Director Devin Rossiter was hired by the Bakersfield (Ca.) Condors of the ECHL as the team’s media director and play-by-play man for radio broadcasts. Rossiter is the third WRBB alumnus in three years to be hired by a professional hockey team directly after graduation.
