Northeastern junior pole vaulter Laura Chmielewski was the lone Husky to qualify for the NCAA Championships at this weekend’s NCAA East Regional Championships held in the Bronx, N.Y. In a jump-off for the fifth and final automatic qualifying spot, she cleared 12-feet-8.75-inches to secure her spot in the national meet that will be held June 8 through 11 in Sacramento, Calif.
Although senior sprinter Ahndraea Allen missed an automatic bid with an eighth place finish in the 400-meter dash, her NU record time of 52.77 she set two weeks ago at the ECAC Championships might allow her to still qualify.
The Huskies 4×100-meter relay of Allen, Jordine Kimbrel, Tremaine Shaw and Shanae Henry fell two spots short of qualifying when they finished 10th with a time of 45.79. And the 4×400-meter relay of Shaw, Kimbrel, Charity Briggs and Allen placed 14th with a time of 3:44.21.
Chmielewski, and possibly Allen, are the only Huskies that will continue to compete in the 2005 outdoor season. Despite the lack of individual accolades at Eastern Regionals, the women had yet another stellar season as a whole, finishing their final outdoor season as a member of the America East in the same fashion as they did their final indoor season: as champions.
The men sent just four athletes to the Eastern Regionals and were led by senior Peter Jasmin, who in his final meet as a member of the NU squad finished 14th in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 14.22 seconds.
Two Huskies competed in throwing events, with senior Adam Crossman placing 22nd in the javelin and freshman Bamidele Faboyede placing 26th in the hammer throw.
Although the men were unable to keep par with the women outdoors this year in their defense they were hobbled by some key injuries, none bigger than the leg injury senior sprinter Idris Payne suffered at the end of the indoor season.
