Alumnus appointed as Mass. chief justice

Northeastern alumnus and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justice Roderick Ireland was nominated Nov. 4 for the chief justice position by newly re-elected governor Deval Patrick. Ireland, if appointed, would be the state’s first African-American chief justice. He received a Ph.D. in Law, Policy and Society in 1998 from Northeastern. Ireland, 65, was raised in Springfield, and received a Bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University, a Juris Doctor from Columbia University, and a Master’s of Laws from Harvard. An associate on the supreme judicial court since 1997, Ireland was first appointed in 1977 to Boston Juvenile Court. The Governor’s Council, a six-member board, will hold a hearing Dec. 1 to consider Ireland’s nomination.

RSA elects new vice president

Northeastern Resident Student Association (RSA) elected Nita Vaidya as vice president for collaboration last night. Viadya’s platform centered around reaching out to and working with student groups outside of RSA. She will be in charge of coordinating events with other organizations, as well as general RSA programming. She will be the third RSA member to serve in the position, after Lauren Burroughs and Julie Rizzolo.

Community clean up Sunday morning

Community Ambassadors, a branch of Off-Campus Services, will hold the Mission Hill Breakfast Club Sunday. They will meet students on the corner of Calumet and St. Alphonsus Street at 11 a.m. Students are encouraged to wear Northeastern colors while they help clean up Mission Hill for an hour. Volunteers will be treated to lunch at a local diner following the service project. Interested students may e-mail [email protected] or meet up with the group Sunday.

An earlier version of RSA elects new vice president said Nita Viadya was the second vice president for collaboration. Viadya is the third person to hold this position. The News regrets this error.
