Officials of the Burlington Planning Board approved an expansion of Northeastern’s Burlington campus, which will nearly double the size of campus’s facilities, last Thursday.

The building is estimated to be between 60,000 and 70,000 square feet, and house a graduate level research center, according to a June 18 article in the Boston Globe.

University officials revealed in a community conversation with Mission Hill residents last month that a 91-year-old alumnus, not the university would not be funding the project.

Additionally, it was revealed the building would be for “pure homeland security research,” Senior Vice President for External Affairs Mike Armini said in the meeting, and because of the sensitivity and security surrounding this type of research, it was best suited for the Burlington campus.

“He’s 91, and wants to have an impact on his alma matter and his country,” said Jack McCarthy, senior vice president for administration and finance, in the meeting. “Either [the alumnus] does this 100 percent, or we do nothing.”

More announcements surrounding the Burlington addition can be expected in the near future, Renata Nyul, director of communications, said in an e-mail to The News.
