Forbes ranks Northeastern 411 on list of top 650 colleges
In its latest list of America’s top overall colleges, Forbes.com ranked Northeastern 411, one spot behind the University of Kentucky and one ahead of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Last year, Northeastern was ranked 534 on the same list. The university has routinely received low marks on Forbes’s list — in 2008 the school was given spot 568 of 569. With last year’s low ranking, Forbes drew the ire of many people on Northeastern’s campus who pointed out flaws in the study’s methodology. Four-year graduation rates are one factor in determining a school’s position on the list, but Northeastern is traditionally a five-year school. In the latest ranking, the university’s four-year graduation rate is zero percent. Forbes also ranked Northeastern 297 on its list of top private colleges and 150 on its list of top research universities. In Forbes’s profile of Northeastern, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Napster creator Shawn Fanning are listed among the university’s famous former students. Princeton University tops the overall list, followed by Williams College and Stanford University.
Northeastern surveillance video to be used in state rep. kidnapping case
A Cambridge District Court judge Tuesday ordered Northeastern to provide footage from its surveillance cameras to attorneys in a kidnapping trial that involves State Rep. Carlos A. Henriquez (D-Dorchester), according to the Boston Globe. Henriquez was arrested in early July after a woman escaped from his car on Forsyth Street and told police that the Dorchester representative assaulted her and refused to let her leave the vehicle. He faces kidnapping and assault charges.
Northeastern hires new law school dean
Northeastern announced last month that Jeremy R. Paul planned to leave the University of Connecticut, where he was dean of the law school, to fill the same position at Northeastern. Paul was set to take over the School of Law deanship in August. In a statement, Northeastern described Paul as a “strong proponent of legal education that integrates theory and practice,” noting that he built an Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic that allows students at UConn to practice in front of the US Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, Northeastern said Paul is someone who “has embraced a global approach to legal education,” having lectured abroad. Paul takes over for Emily Spieler, whom the university announced last September was resigning as dean of the School of Law at the end of the 2011-12 school year.
