When he started college majoring in pharmacy, Jeff Carvalho never thought he would swap those studies for journalism and wind up blogging for a living instead.
A quick glance at his website, www.Jeffcarvalho.com, reveals his portfolio of media pursuits:’ The Northeastern graduate is an editor at www.Selectism.com and www.Highsnobiety.com, Titel Media-owned blogs that report about news and products in menswear and street fashion, respectively.
He also founded a satellite radio program called WeeklyDrop and started a blog called Social Consumer that features essay-style commentary:’ It’s ‘an ongoing review of the moment,’ according to the site, www.Socialconsumer.com.
He said he made the switch to blogging full time in 2007. He decided to leave his desk job when he realized he was thinking about blogging all day instead of work.
In addition to Internet-based media, Carvalho is a lifestyle consultant for companies looking to get an informed opinion about how to cater to certain demographics. He said the work he does now focuses on what he’s interested in.
‘I don’t turn off,’ he said. ‘A lot of what I do is part of my life anyway.’
When Carvalho left school, he worked in the technology industry, but things changed when he started to investigate the world of sneakers ‘- like what makes some people wait in line for hours outside of a store to get a limited edition of Nike kicks.
He said his interest in sneakers began with a shoe from Nike made from woven pieces of fabric.
He blogs about sneakers on Selectism and Highsnobiety, as well as other lifestyle products, and aims to inform readers about the best of everything ‘- from clothing to books.
‘We don’t write about a product that we don’t like,’ he said while sitting at his desk.
Carvalho lives in a loft near Fenway Park. His bike hangs on the wall just inside his front door and the walls are a calm yellow.
His place is furnished in a clean modern style ‘- a large, black, cubby-style bookshelf covers one wall and is filled with books and products he reviews. Headphones are tacked to the wall behind his desk and his black cat roams comfortably around his place.
His job takes him all around the world. He said he’s been everywhere from Geneva, Switzerland, to Frankfurt, Germany and Las Vegas, Nev. He travels for conventions and other work-related projects.
‘I don’t consider myself a journalist,’ he said, as cars drove by on the highway outside his window. ‘I’m an absorber.’
