Saturday the track team had its home opener ‘- the non-scoring Husky Spring Invitational ‘- at Solomon Track in Dedham. This was the second meet of the year for Northeastern.
The men were successful in field events. In the pole vault they went 1-2; in first was sophomore Pablo Rodriguez at 15-feet 6-inches and junior Jordan Thull at 15-feet. Also in first was senior Bamidele Faboyede in the hammer toss throwing 193-feet. On the track junior Konrad Stefanek was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.64 seconds.
‘It went well for us, it went as expected,’ said head coach Sherman Hart. ‘There were no big surprises for us.’
On the women’s side there were seven first place finishes. Four of the wins came from two competitors. Senior Katie Sherman, a former Boston College transfer and sister of senior Jack Sherman, captain of the men’s team, won the 100-meter hurdle with a time of 15.25 seconds, and the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.19. Senior Nancy Rowe took the high jump with a 4-foot-11.75-inch mark and the javelin with a throw of 133-feet-1-inch.
Also winning their events was sophomore Jessica Barton in the 5-kilometer in 17:48.64, freshman Lauren Bennett won the pole vault with a 10-foot-3-inch mark and junior Celeste Holder won the long jump with a leap of 17-feet-2.75-inches.
‘I just held people out because we are going all out next week,’ Hart said. ‘We have people going in multiple events in Florida, we are going against these same three teams. [The weather] reduces speed, it reduces height, it reduces everything. It is very counterproductive to good performances.’
