Springfest always brings in big artists to campus, and this year the Council for University Programs (CUP) did not disappoint, getting rapper Kid Cudi to headline. With the thumping bass, the slightly intoxicated fans and the sold out arena, Cudi absolutely impressed. The opening acts were equally impressive, as indie rock bands Cage the Elephant and the Cults performed at Matthews Arena.
The Springfest trio won Best Campus Show by a landslide, taking 54 percent of the vote. Anberlin, the Static Jacks and Young Alive came in second with nine percent, followed closely by the John Coltrane Memorial Concert, which got eight percent. Clearly, students are still hung up on last year’s Nelly Springfest performance, as there were multiple write-ins begging for an encore.
“I had no desire to go to Nelly last year, but I got a Kid Cudi ticket immediately. He’s one of my favorite rappers. I also really like both Cage the Elephant and the Cults,” Kamila Widulinski, a sophomore architecture major, said.
Springfest tickets sold out on myNEU within minutes, and student Facebook pages were abuzz with kids trying to buy, sell and trade tickets.
The show was packed, and everyone seemed to know every word of Kid Cudi’s lyrics.
“The sound wasn’t great in Matthews,” Widulinski said. “Cudi was pretty hard to understand, but the show was fun anyway and it was really cool that he came to campus.”
