The theme of the season is clean concepts, with many actresses opting for a simple, classic silhouetted gown while also maintaining the structure and elegance of the designer. Makeup-wise, subtlety has been the look of late: less is more. Gone are the days of teased hair, braids and the sock bun. Instead, tousled French braids, side-swept curls and clean updos have become a fashion standard.
With a bubbling fashion scene on campus, Northeastern students shared their thoughts.
The Good
Coming in fifth place was Kate Beckinsale, rocking a custom piece by designer Zohair Murad, which had authentic pieces of steel incorporated into it. She donned a simple silhouette, light makeup and Chopard jewels.
“I think she looks amazing, the dress is so form fitting. It’s so simple but she looks beautiful,” freshman Amanda Yu said.
In fourth place, Lizzie Caplan strolled the red carpet wearing Emilio Pucci with a pair of David Yurman earrings and a clutch. Caplan, who once played Janice Ian in “Mean Girls,” knocked it out of the park with this ensemble. The clean design, simple makeup and intricate details embedded in the fabric made her look glamorous – a far cry from her days of having a lesbian crush on Regina George.
Coming up in third place is newcomer Margot Robbie of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Margot donned a crème-colored Gucci gown paired with emerald Christian Louboutin pumps, a perfect pop of color that also matched the trim of her dress.
Cate Blanchette, clad in Armani Prive black satin-lace, took second place. The uniformity of Cate’s look was so elegant and took risks with each appearance.
First place goes to “12 Years A Slave” breakthrough actress, Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren. The red custom cape-dress looked gorgeous on her and her matching lip with fresh makeup perfected the look.
“It’s just so different, she looks happy and her confidence shines through,” said sophomore Ellie Fitzgerald.
The Bad
On to the less fortunate looks of the night. Starting the list at third worst look of the Golden Globes, Edie Falco in Lanvin confused the carpet with a horrid, satin dress. Her hair and makeup was sensational, but it ended there.
“She honestly resembles a bag of Yukon potatoes in the dress,” said freshman Tyler Vern.
Unlucky number two is Taylor Schilling in a Thakoon frock and lace bustier, which resembled a typical grandmother’s night slip. The makeup was wrong, overdone and it aged her face, as did her low curls. Had Schilling opted for an updo with light eye-shadow and a neutral lip, she would have looked much more elegant and carefree.
Last and certainly least, the worst-dressed celebrity of the night was Lena Dunham in Zac Posen Couture. She managed to take one of the most sought after designers and make a mockery of his craft. It was all wrong, starting with the fit. The gown appeared two sizes too small, and let’s not start on the hair – it’s called a shower or dry shampoo.
“She looks like she crawled out of bed and decided to crash the Golden Globes,” said junior Daniel Kurtz.
That’s a wrap for the 2014 Golden Globes fashion. Until next year, keep it simple and fire your stylist, ladies.
