Rather than celebrating an embittered Singles Awareness Day (SAD), Bostonians have a chance to rebel against the “season of love” in a way that goes beyond buying oneself the on-sale box of Christmas Russel Stovers on the way home with a lonely RedBox rental.
This Feb. 14, a number of Anti-Valentines Day events will be held throughout the city, usually coupled with prixe fixe drink menus.
Love Sux Party at Howl at the Moon, 184 High St., $10, 21+
Starting at 4 p.m., patrons can get into this popular, sandy-brick band tavern for an event that will also be held in several other cities like Houston, Chicago and Orlando. With admission normally set at $10 for Friday nights, Howl at the Moon will be offering free entry to anyone who brings a defaced photo of their ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend. “F-Bombs,” an apple pie moonshine and Red Bull drink combination, will be served for $6. Howl at the Moon will also be serving an “X-Boyfriend” cocktail, described as an “X-Rated fusion liqueur” with Smirnoff vanilla vodka, orange, pineapple and cranberry.
According to the website’s official press release, loveless patrons can expect to “enjoy a cynical, Anti-Valentine’s Day with great drink specials” and to hear from “our dueling pianos [which] will be rocking your favorite anti love-jams.”
“We have singles and couples themed games like a marshmallow eating contest. We are opening up to all singles and couples who just want to have a fun night,” said marketing manager Valerie Vangerven. “We are also offering fun giveaways all night including through our Facebook page where our guests can enter to win a full catered party.
Sweet Cheeks Meat Market, 1381 Boylston St., $25
Advertised with the tagline, “Love can be tough, BBQ shouldn’t be!” another place to celebrate Anti-Valentine’s Day is at the Sweet Cheeks Meat Market. From 7-11 p.m., the restaurant will be throwing another “celebration for the commitment-phobic” with barbecue, cocktails, games, pizza and “absolutely no slow, romantic songs,” according to its website.
Customers can try any of the Fenway restaurant’s favorites, including their Coconut Chicken Tenders, which are tender strips rolled in a mixture of shredded coconut and bread crumbs and served with an orange marmalade dipping sauce. Desserts like the tavern’s Chocolate Fudge Lava Cake, a flourless chocolate lava cake with a warm ganache fudge center served with vanilla ice cream, will also be available. Regular menu dishes range from about $8 – $19.
Flirt Fest, 1 Boylston Place, $20
Running from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m., Flirt Fest is described by Boston Events Guide as “the sexiest Anti-Valentines day party.” Riddled with cash prizes, contests for the best and worst pickup lines as well as Boston’s biggest male and female flirt will be held throughout the evening.
There will also be a free, light hors d’oeuvres reception with a cocktail cash bar. Top 40 music will be played by a DJ.
And for those trying to save money, LivingSocial is offering a $10 ticket deal (save 50 percent) for a limited time.
Valentines Day Hangover Party at Hard Rock Cafe, 24 Clinton St., $15, 21+
The TimberFakes, advertised as “Boston’s only Justin Timberlake cover band,” will be performing alongside LoVeSeXy, a Prince cover band, at the cavern club section of the Hard Rock Cafe at 8 p.m. Feb. 15 as an after-party to Valentines Day.
At the Hard Rock Cafe, diners can enjoy a variety of American-style menu items and bite-sized desserts like strawberry cheesecake bites and chocolate peanut butter pie bites.
