The Panhellenic Council Judicial Committee found Sigma Delta Tau sorority guilty of hazing last Friday. The sorority will have an opportunity to appeal, and will not be formally sanctioned until the end of the appeals process, according to a statement from university spokesperson Renata Nyul.
The council’s investigation into the sorority began after recent pledges reported allegations of hazing, according to the statement. The specific infractions, or when they took place, were not included. Members of Sigma Delta Tau and the Panhellenic Council could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
Sigma Delta Tau was founded in 1917 at Cornell University and joined Northeastern’s Greek community on June 8, 1989. The Northeastern Chapter has been awarded with various accolades including 2008’s Sigma Delta Tau Diamond Chapter.
Within the Student Code of Conduct for Northeastern University hazing is defined by Massachusetts General Law and includes games or activities that are physically or psychologically compromising. This is considered a Level II violation with a minimum sanction of probation.
