With the forecast for much of the week predicting rain and cold weather, Homecoming chair Tom Kneafsey is trying to rework many of the events that were planned for the outdoors.
Today’s Mayor of Huntington Avenue event, scheduled for activities period, will be moved to the West Addition of the Curry Student Center, Kneafsey said. He is also working to move other events, including Thursday’s scheduled pep rally and tailgate party, to Stetson East if the rain continues.
For more information, he said, students can check the “Homecoming” link on Northeastern’s main Web site.
“We’re not going to let the rain affect the excitement that Homecoming is at all,” Kneafsey said. “It’s still going to be the best Homecoming we’ve had yet.”
The rain threatens the events that have been planned for months, and now coordinators must work to reorganize and rejuvenate Homecoming at Northeastern. In the past several years, Homecoming has failed to draw a large student turnout, and each year the Council for University Programs (CUP), along with other student groups, has attempted to encourage and promote student participation in activities.
This year’s Homecoming, reworked to create more interest among students, contains a variety of activities, events and shows.
CUP, which has played a smaller role in this year’s Homecoming due to the creation of the Homecoming Committee, still plans to host events during the week, including a comedy show in collaboration with the Latin American Student Organization featuring Pablo Francisco Oct. 15. Tickets will be on sale starting today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the library quad. Francisco will be performing two shows, one at 7 p.m., geared toward parents visiting for Parents Weekend, which has already sold out, and one at 9 p.m., a student affair only.
CUP will be hosting another event Oct. 24, right after the conclusion of Homecoming week.
Frank Santos, an R-rated hypnotist whose routine includes a “Lollipop suckin’ contest” and a striptease contest, will visit Northeastern for the first time and for a good cause.
“The tickets are free, but there will be a suggested $5 donation to go to Hurricane Katrina relief,” said Andie Rizzolo, CUP showcases chair.
The tickets for this event will be sold today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the library quad, and on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the ground floor in the Curry Student Center. The tickets will also be on sale beginning today in the Campus Activities office.
